Sierra was one of the tougher and more talented squads in the Valley Oak League this year.

On Saturday, head coach Alex Nuanez will lead Sierra (6-1) into its first-ever appearance at the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Dual Tournament at Lincoln High in Stockton.

Also at Lincoln is 2012 champion Ripon in Division V. Across town at Stockton, the area’s top female wrestlers will compete in the CIF SJS Regional Invitational.

Sierra is scheduled to bump heads with either Central Valley or Patterson out of the Western Athletic Conference at 10:30 a.m. in Division IV. VOL champion Oakdale is one of two teams with a first-round bye in the six-team bracket.

“I think we got a good chance to make it into the finals,” Nuanez said.

The Indians (4-2) out of the Trans-Valley League will meet a team from the Golden Empire League, Lindhurst or Marysville.

For the girls tournament, Ripon will take seven, including Kendyl Post at 111 pounds. The Indians will also take Brenna Gall (137), Tori White (131) and Mireya Garcia (170).

Only the top wrestlers from Friday advance to the next day.

Lathrop will also be taking seven girls, including standout senior Jasmine Ivey at 137s and fellow senior Edna Magana at 121s.

Out of Sierra’s six girls, Victoria Burke (126) and Ashley Elliott (106) are expected to make a respectable runs. The T’Wolves are also bringing Taleah Garza, Miriam Garcia and Julianna Deanda.

Weston Ranch will have the largest group among area schools, highlighted by Alyssa Cantu (189) and Mia Hill (106). Assistant coach Seth Davis will also bring Salena Valaenzuela (103), Taylor Mar (111), Ana Pascual (160) and Tranisha Escandate (153).
