LATHROP – Nick McGill came through in the clutch during Thursday’s Valley Oak League finale between East Union and Lathrop.

The Lancers’ 195-pound senior picked up a win that cut East Union’s deficit down to two, which helped lift it to a 40-33 victory over Lathrop (1-6) on the Spartans’ Senior Night.

East Union (2-6) ended the year on a positive note.

After McGill’s 1-minute, 35-second pin over Lathrop’s Tyler Kerlegan made it 33-31, a forfeit out of the Spartans’ 220-pound slot gave the Lancers a 37-33 cushion with one match remaining.

The Lancers’ heavyweight Mikey Villanueva edged Lathrop’s Brian Folgar 6-1 to make up the final.

“My coach told me before my match that we needed a pin in order to win,” said McGill. “Even though (Villanueva) pulled through in a big match for us, I think (my pin) was vital.”

East Union had a couple more instrumental pins.

While the Lancers were trailing 12-6 early on, they pieced together consecutive victories to regain the advantage. At 132, East Union’s Kyle Bean pinned Andrew Gaynor in the middle of the second round to make it 15-12.

Lathrop standout Jasmine Ivey (138) was giving East Union freshman Ruben Gallegos all he could handle during their bout.

Gallegos was losing and then tied the match at 2-2 before flipping Ivey over for the pin in 3:10, which made it 18-15, Lancers.

“They wrestled tough,” Lathrop head coach Vincent Garcia said. “They came out and wrestled as hard as they could. Some of them gave up points that we shouldn’t have, but all in all they wrestled their hearts out tonight. Now we just have to get ready for the (VOL Tournament).”

After East Union put itself ahead by three, freshman Jesus Vasquez (145) stretched the Lancers’ lead out even further. Vasquez outscored Lathrop’s Enrique Betancourt 13-3 for the four-point win, which made it 22-15, East Union.

Lathrop wasn’t out, however.

The Spartans’ Manny Vallim (152) registered a key pin in the first round over EU’s Carlos Romero. The 40-second pin for Vallim cut Lathrop’s deficit down to one at 22-21.

East Union forfeited the next match, which put it in a five-point hole.

The Lancers’ 172-pounder, Joel Melena, delivered a hard-fought 12-6 win over Ian Chavez, who trailed 6-2 after the first and 8-5 after the second period. Melena’s victory made it 27-25, but another EU forfeit made it 33-25 in favor of Lathrop, which was followed by McGill’s pin, a Lathrop forfeit and then the EU heavyweight Villanueva with the sealer.

“We gave up some points, but I was impressed with us getting some pins instead of (decision) wins,” East Union head coach Andrew Reindel said. “That’s what made the difference.

“(McGill’s) pin was big, but I think what tuned the momentum was Bean getting the pin when he was losing and then Gallegos pinning Jasmine (Ivey).”

East Union 106-pound freshman Jason Betlej handled business in 23 seconds as he gave the Lancers the early 6-0 lead after defeating Kim Vega.

Lathrop’s 113-pounder Christian Garcia tied the bout at six apiece after pinning EU’s Enrique Mendoza in 3:24. Standout Alex Garcia won by forfeit after David Mendoza of the Lancers withdrew due to injury.

The best match of the night was at 126 pounds between East Union’s Daman Cabanas and Lathrop senior Israel Barrelo.

The match went to double overtime after Cabanas tied it at the end of regulation with a near fall that tied it at 10 after he was trailing by four late in the third.

Cabanas was down 8-1 in the second frame.

After Cabanas tied it at 10, the match stood scoreless during the one minute of the first overtime. In the second overtime, Barrelo pulled out a 13-11 victory with a takedown before winding down the clock.

“That was a huge win for (Barrelo),” Garcia concluded. “He’s a senior, and he wanted to go out with a win in his last match at Lathrop High (School). He stepped up real big. All in all, all of the kids wrestled tough and I couldn’t ask for more.”

Lathrop and the Lancers will both be competing at the VOL Tournament at Sonora High on Feb. 15.
