STOCKTON – The East Union Lancers took on teams complete with wrestlers in each weight class, but were able to do battle short-staffed, still competing during the team-dual portion of the Bear Creek Tournament Friday at Delta College.

The Lancers held their own with a 3-2 record through five tournament matches, beating Lindhurst, Santa Cruz and Bear Creek High’s. East Union opened with a 46-36 loss to Lincoln of Stockton, before handling Lindhurst 43-36 then falling to Atwater 46-32. The squad closed out the day with back-to-back wins over Santa Cruz (43-18) and Edison (39-24).

East Union was able to finish with 25 victories in just 33 matches, with three Lancers finishing the tournament opener without a loss.

“I was very pleased with how we performed on the mat (Friday),” East Union head coach Andrew Reindel said. “All of our wrestlers competed for us and we battled even though we were giving teams 30 points in nearly every match.”

The Lancers have several holes to fill in their team’s 14 different weight classes, but the weights that East Union does have filled are off to a solid start. Marco Castaneda finished with a perfect 5-0 record in 135’s, while teammates Parsa Davari (145’s) and Devon Woodall (heavyweight) both notched perfect 5-0 days as well.

East Union will kickoff day two at 9 a.m., opening the individual competition of the tournament. Each weight class will boast 16-wrestler brackets, setting up a grueling path for any of the tournaments anticipating individual weight-class champions.

“I feel we have two or three guys who could win the tournament or place high,” Reindel said. “I have a couple of other ones who may be able to grab a third or fourth place finish.

“As far as winning it, I don’t know, but I think we’ll be up there.”
