Lathrop High can still be considered a newcomer to the Academic Decathlon competition.

This group coached by Government / Economy teacher Michael Pangburn and assistant Hillary Beshears – she’s a teacher at nearby Mossdale Elementary School – continues to improve each year.

At the 33rd annual San Joaquin County Academic Decathlon held in Stockton Lathrop High, Lathrop took third place in the Large School Division I. Tracy and Manteca High were first and second, respectively.

“This is the third year for Lathrop High (in the Academic Decathlon),” Pangburn said. “We sent two teams to the competition – Large Schools Division I and Division II.”

His team finished third in the Small School Division a year ago.

“We moved up (this year) and placed third in Division I,” said Pangburn.

Individually, Cameron Gazaway earned medals in language arts, art, interview and top overall in his division. Karman Dhaliwal did likewise in History and Economics.

Others earning medals were Chris Consul (Speech / Interview), Michael Weber (Science) and Jared Palma (History).

“I’m very proud of our decathletes,” said Pangburn. “They put in a lot of time and effort and did a wonderful job representing our school and community.”
