SACRAMENTO (AP) — Democratic lawmakers say they will give a state senator one week to resign or risk being suspended after he was indicted last week on multiple federal corruption charges.

Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg said after meeting behind closed doors with his fellow Senate Democrats that, as a matter of fairness, they agreed to give Sen. Ron Calderon until next week to consider their demand.

Calderon was arraigned Monday in Los Angeles on charges that he accepted $100,000 in bribes and lavish trips. A spokesman for Calderon, Mario Beltran, said he could not immediately comment.

Steinberg defended asking Calderon to resign while another Democratic senator, Roderick Wright, is allowed to stay in office as he awaits sentencing. Wright was found guilty last month of voter fraud and perjury.
