Leon and Liz Sucht celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Chez Shari at the Manteca Golf Course, January 4, 2009.

Both Leon and Liz come from small towns in Kansas.  They met while attending Kansas State University through the on-campus collegiate 4-H club.  During the next few years, they both finished their studies, Leon lived abroad as an IFYE exchange student in Panama and he also spent six months with the US Army.    They married on December 28, 1958.

Bank of America recruited Leon and they moved out west to California in 1960.  They first settled in Bakersfield, and then proceeded to live up and down the Central Valley of California, living in Tulare, Chino, El Centro, Los Banos, Manteca, and Hanford.  Leon worked for Bank of America for 30 years.  Liz worked as a hospital nurse, school nurse, county health nurse, and taught adult education classes throughout the years.

They raised three children together —  LeAnn (now married with one young son, living in the Bay Area), Gayle (now married and also living in the Bay Area),  and Steven (married and living in Colorado).  They were very involved in their community, including helping with the 4-H club as club leaders, with the Methodist church, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and AAUW.  Twenty-nine years ago they took their family to a week-long church camp in the Sierras, fell in love with the camp, and haven’t missed a year yet.  Their children also continue to attend Family Camp, now with their own families.

After retiring in Hanford, they moved back up to Manteca and currently enjoy a very busy retirement.  Leon and Liz remain extremely active in their community.  They help with the Manteca Historical Society, the Methodist Church, Rotary, organize quilt shows, paint town murals, and attend fund raisers.  They also spend a good amount of time traveling, especially with Elderhostel group trips.

Their children value the example Leon and Liz have shown of a strong and loving marriage.  All of their three children and families were able to attend the celebration.
