RIPON — After leading by just seven points at halftime Thursday, No. 5 Ripon Christian repeatedly drove to the basket and put up 29 third-quarter points on its way to a convincing 64-38 victory over 12th-seeded Buckingham Charter-Vacaville in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V boys basketball playoffs.

“We were going strong to the basket, a lot stronger in the third quarter then we did in the first half,” Ripon Christian coach Ron Vander Molen said. “A lot of that had to do with passing and we did a good job finishing, even though we were getting fouled.”

In addition to an offensive showcase in the third period, Ripon Christian (22-5) held Buckingham Charter (12-10) to just eight points in the period.

“We changed to a zone and that threw them off,” Vander Molen said. “They had a hard time adjusting and then we were able to get decent shots in transition.”

Ripon Christian’s Sean Broker shared high-point honors with older brother Eric at 14. Sean also had six assists.

“If I am wide open and I see that someone else has a better shot than I do I am going to get it to them,” Broker said. “I will pass up a good shot to get a better shot.”

Eric Broker just missed a double-double and tallied nine rebounds.

“It takes rebounds to get offense,” he said. “So I just grabbed as many boards as I could and kicked it ahead for the guards to take it and get it into the fast break.

“We had a shaky second quarter, but coach talked to us and told us to take off in the third quarter and that is when we played solid basketball and took off.”

Danny Vander Molen added nine points for Ripon Christian and Travis Vander Molen had eight and seven assists. Phillip Kennedy led Buckingham Charter with 11.

Ripon Christian continues in the playoffs Friday, traveling to Auburn to face Forest Lake Christian.
