FAIRFIELD – The Lancers made the long trip to Fairfield only to drop its non-league contest against the Monticello Empire League’s Armijo Indians 47-35 Wednesday.

East Union (3-1) suffered its first set back of the season, falling behind early with a lackluster 15 point production offensively in the game’s first 16 minutes.

“We were pretty much behind most of the game,” East Union head coach Jim Agostini said. “We were able to cut it to three late, but back-to-back turnovers there late really killed us.”

Armijo settled down over the second half with the Lancers holding them to just six points in the third. A huge 17-point third quarter pushed the Indians back in charge and left the Lancers coping with a blown opportunity.

“We really had to gamble in that fourth quarter,” Agostini said. “When we gambled a little bit and they were able to get loose and knock down a couple of three’s.

“They really just outplayed us tonight.”

Leyi Pose and Shalane Jackson shared high point honors with 11 apiece, while teammate Rachel Oneal controlled the boards with eight rebounds. The Lancers will have to right their wrongs in a hurry with a solid Ripon High squad rolling into the Dalben Center Friday.

“We play against a good basketball team in Ripon,” Agostini said. “They always play us tough. Everyone is just trying to work on some things and trying to find our identity; and we will.”
