Today promises to be a fun fowl day, and so much more, at the Manteca Unified School Farm.

The school district is playing host to the 3rd Annual Nor Cal Serama Spectacular, the 2014 Serama Council of America Semi Nationals. Manteca Unified’s FFA poultry students from the five high school campuses in the district will be joined by other poultry students from various schools throughout California and from out of state in the annual birds competition.

The event, to take place from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 2271 West Louise Avenue, is open to the public. Admission is free.

It’s an opportunity for the public to view up close some of the FFA Poultry students’ 100-plus chickens that include Brahmas and Nankins as well as Seramas.

The specific types of birds that will be shown in the different poultry judging classes include cock, hen, cockerel, pullet, silkied, frizzled, and malay. Judges this year are Jim Adkins and Kevin Re.

Making encore appearances in this annual show will be a costume contest for the birds which was a big hit last year, plus the usual silent auction, birds for sale, and a raffle that offers prizes ranging from informational printed materials plus various items for one’s poultry project.

Manteca Unified’s FFA poultry program is not designed as a money-making venture for the students but is primarily to provide them experience in raising chickens. The program was originally offered under the Manteca Unified Student Trust, an organization that made it possible for students to get involved in after-school activities and projects. However, the school district took over the running of the program when MUST declared fiscal independence three years ago.

Held in conjunction with the Serama Spectacular today is the 2014 Spring Fling Open Boer Goat Show and competition which is also taking place at the School Farm. In charge of the MUSD boer goat program is Danielle Ariaz.
