The Bulletin

Manteca High celebrated its return home with a resounding sweep of its crosstown rival.

The Buffaloes didn’t drop a set all afternoon in a 9-0 Valley Oak League win over Sierra. Singles players Yok-Jing Ma and Mike Lopez led the onslaught with a near-identical 6-0, 6-0 victories over Keegan D’Souza and Laic Beugre, respectively.

The home match was the program’s first in more than year. The Buffaloes hosted matches at the Union Road tennis courts last spring while its courts were being resurfaced.

Head coach Frank Fontana said the return home brought out the best in the Buffaloes, now 2-0 on the young season.

“There is something about playing at home that you just can’t explain and makes people play better,” he said. “Typically, we have been very successful when playing at Manteca High, and we just want to keep the winning streak going.

“The constant travel I think just wore us down last year.”

Gino Mercado, Thomas Reza, Spencer Jackson and Edvin Pepic all recorded singles victories for Manteca, which leaves on Friday for its annual trip to the California High School Tennis Classic in Clovis.

The doubles teams of Alex Vasquez-Kyle Thornton, Yok-Eyh Ma-Nolan Osborn and Yayha Shabbar-Christian Plares completed the Buffaloes’ sweep.

Sierra is now 0-2.
