GALT — In the end, the Capital Christian press was just too much to handle as the Cougars started on an 8-0 run and never trailed in a 56-38 win over Ripon Christian in the semifinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V girls basketball championships at Galt High’s Warrior Gymnasium.

“They were just quicker than us,” Indians coach Ed Mulder said. “We needed to get through the press a little easier and their pressure took us out of our offense.

“They went in streaks and would make runs. We would get down by five or so and then we would be down by 12 and then by 16.

Ripon Christian (22-4) bounced back from that slow start to come within 8-5 and 17-14 in the first period only to have Capital Christian (24-4) start the second period on a 13-4 run.

The Knights’ last hurrah came at the end of the third quarter when Teagan Manus drained a 3-pointer to bring Ripon Christian within 42-33. The Cougars went on a 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter and coasted the rest of the way.

Manus led the Knights with 17 points. Ripon Christian will now wait for Sunday’s seeding announcement from the CIF state office to find out when and where it will begin play in the NorCal tournament.
