LAKE ELSINORE (AP) — A group that blocked construction of a veterans’ memorial featuring a cross has now successfully challenged a memorial roadside cross in the same Southern California city.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise (says AnnMarie Devaney has agreed to remove a cross she put up in Lake Elsinore to honor her 19-year-old son Anthony, who was struck by a car and killed two years ago.

The American Humanist Association demanded the removal on grounds that the cross’ placement on city property violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

Devaney says she’ll take down the cross on Thursday.

Last year the group went to court to block the installation of a monument outside Diamond Stadium. It depicted a soldier kneeling before a cross-topped grave.
