SUMMER ROCK AT SOUTHSIDE
New Hope Church hosted the Summer Rock event Saturday at Southside Park that provided free food, games, and other activities for neighborhood kids as part of its outreach effort to combat the influence of gangs. The event also included prizes as well as Payless Shoe gift cards.

MUST awards scholarships for graduates of five high schools
The Manteca Unified Student Trust announced its 2009 scholarship winners on Friday. The recipients were recent graduates from the district's secondary sites – Manteca High, East Union, Sierra, Weston Ranch and Lindbergh schools. Students were required to maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average and contributed at least 100 hours of community service within the past four years.
Kids take over farmers market this Tuesday
Kids are taking over the Manteca Farmers Market at Library Park this Tuesday. Lathrop Junior Police Academy starts July 20
LATHROP – The Lathrop Police Services division of the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department will be hosting its annual Junior Police Academy this summer July 20 through July 31. The academy is open to fifth- through eighth-grade students from Lathrop. Students must maintain at least a "C" grade average and have no criminal contact with Lathrop Police Services.

Pedestrian struck by car on Center St. dies
A 70-year-old Manteca man struck by a westbound car in the 200 block of East Center Street at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday died of his injuries in San Joaquin General Hospital, according to police reports.
Tony & Mrs. K’s Bakery Café opens at East Yosemite & Cottage avenues
It is a dynamic change of life for Artemis Vourakis from being a legal secretary to opening a Greek Bakery and Café at the corner of East Yosemite and Cottage avenues in Manteca. Vourakis' brother Hercules is opening a modern car wash on the site late in July or early August.
