Wants to sell jointly owned property

Q: I read your last posting in the Tribune regards options for selling jointly owned property. I have a horrific situation not for the faint at heart. We are two brothers fighting worse than a Spanish bull ring.. Animosity exists between my older brother and my wife. He has no rush, and enjoys the comfort when he comes to Chicago to stay as long as he wishes in the basement and collects rent from the first floor of this 2 flat. Meantime I live with my wife on the 2nd floor. We want out of this situation. What once was ...

Lawn games to enjoy in early autumn

As long as the sun is shining, early autumn is a great time to get outside and enjoy that beautiful you've been working so hard to maintain throughout the year. Barbecues and picnics are always a good excuse to get family and friends together but after you've finished eating you don't want the kids (or the adults) wandering back inside to waste a glorious day staring at a television or a computer screen. It's time for some good old-fashioned backyard fun: lawn games.

Hot colors for kitchen and bath

So many of us love the rich colors featured in kitchen and bath magazines, but when it comes to selecting colors for our own homes, we tend to play it safe. It's time to be bold and get out of the color comfort zone. Whether it's a vibrant backsplash, playful shade on the wall, or a new sink color that pops with personality, today's hot color trends are anything but boring.

Making real estate play after owner dies

DEAR BENNY: I resided with a 71-year-old male who died in November with no will. I took care of him since 2002 and lived with him since 2005 because his health was diminishing. His family had basically abandoned him, never visiting or making any type of contact with him. I want to know if there is any way I can keep the house as my residence. We discussed his getting a will, but he died before he could get a lawyer. He was going to leave the house to me. --Carl

There is a lot to think about when remodeling your kitchen. You want to design a kitchen that reflects your taste and style, which you'll love for years to come. What fine print is required when you go to sell a house?

Good day Real Estate Boys, kudos to the Journal for running your column for their readers. Today's question is an easy one for you Boys I'm sure. What exactly is required to sell a house? I don't mean the deed or signing papers or even the silly answer, duh, a buyer. I mean what are the state laws that every home owner must know to sell a house. I hope you guys can understand what I'm asking. I know what I'm asking but can't seem to make it understandable in writing. I'm so ...

Tips to help find the perfect home

For most Americans your home is the biggest ticket item you will ever purchase. It's no wonder that people can take months, and sometimes even years, to find the perfect home. When you walk into a house that's on the market, many times the homeowner or real estate agent has "staged" it to ensure that you focus on the home's greatest assets and overlook its flaws. Your job is to look past all that to see if this house is right for you.
