Wants to sell jointly owned property

Q: I read your last posting in the Tribune regards options for selling jointly owned property. I have a horrific situation not for the faint at heart. We are two brothers fighting worse than a Spanish bull ring.. Animosity exists between my older brother and my wife. He has no rush, and enjoys the comfort when he comes to Chicago to stay as long as he wishes in the basement and collects rent from the first floor of this 2 flat. Meantime I live with my wife on the 2nd floor. We want out of this situation. What once was ...

Lawn games to enjoy in early autumn

As long as the sun is shining, early autumn is a great time to get outside and enjoy that beautiful you've been working so hard to maintain throughout the year. Barbecues and picnics are always a good excuse to get family and friends together but after you've finished eating you don't want the kids (or the adults) wandering back inside to waste a glorious day staring at a television or a computer screen. It's time for some good old-fashioned backyard fun: lawn games.

Making real estate play after owner dies

DEAR BENNY: I resided with a 71-year-old male who died in November with no will. I took care of him since 2002 and lived with him since 2005 because his health was diminishing. His family had basically abandoned him, never visiting or making any type of contact with him. I want to know if there is any way I can keep the house as my residence. We discussed his getting a will, but he died before he could get a lawyer. He was going to leave the house to me. --Carl
