‘Superstar’ beach in OC

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) - An Orange County beach is the only one in California to get a "superstar" rating from the Natural Resources Defense Council in its annual water quality report card. The NRDC says 38th Street beach in Newport Beach didn't exceed bacteria levels a single time over the course of 50 tests. The Orange County Register reports the nonprofit released its 24th annual beach ranking on Wednesday.

• DA: Shooting of Calif. college student justified: SAN BERNARDINO (AP) - Prosecutors say two campus police officers at Cal State University, San Bernardino, were justified when they shot a graduate student to death while trying to detain him. The San Bernardino County District Attorney's office says the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Bartholomew Williams on Dec. 8, 2012, was justified because campus police officers feared for their lives and acted in self-defense. • SUBWAY PROJECT REACHES MILESTONE: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The construction of a $1.6 billion subway through San Francisco's Chinatown has reached a milestone. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that crews finished digging the tunnel for the Central Subway earlier this month. John Funghi, the subway's project manager, says the excavation was completed on time and within budget. The 1.7-mile subway will connect the city's South of Market and North Beach neighborhoods. • Suspect in Northern California standoff found dead: FAIRFIELD (AP) - Police in Northern California say officers found a man suspected of shooting multiple rounds in his neighborhood dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a roughly eight-hour standoff. The Fairfield police SWAT team entered the suspect's home at 8:39 p.m. Monday. They killed an aggressive dog after a stun gun failed to subdue it and then found the man dead upstairs. He has not been identified.
