Times Square on New Year’s to be ‘safest place in the world’

NEW YORK (AP) - With the nation still jittery over shooting massacres in California and Paris, New York City officials sought to assure revelers Tuesday that the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square will be the safest place in the world - heavily secured by thousands of New York Police Department officers, including a new specialized counterterrorism unit.

DALLAS (AP) - A Texas teenager sentenced to probation for causing a fatal drunken-driving crash was taken into custody late Monday in Mexico, where authorities believe he and his mother fled after he may have violated terms of his probation. Ethan Couch, now 18, received the light sentence in 2013 after his attorneys said he suffered from "affluenza," which drew widespread ridicule.
