Thoughts on Thanksgiving

Some Thanksgivings are easy. When my children were younger, I just could not believe how lucky I was: two beautiful children, kinehora (in Jewish, that means "Keep the evil eye away"). We invited friends and loaded the table with food; I think I even shed a few tears of pure joy. If you are going to have that kind of Thanksgiving, then all I can say is that I am green with envy. Really. I don't covet money or things, but that kind of joy - the kind that has eluded me for so many years - of that I am ...

Academics stunned by Trump’s win … and that’s a bad thing

A friend of mine recently told me about a troubling experience his daughter had at a California community college. She had to endure a political rant from one of her professors, who compared Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler and claimed Trump's election was worse than 9/11.

The cracked crystal ball of liberal celebrities

Before the shock of President Donald Trump wears off, let's remember to tip our hats to Tinseltown. What would we do without it? The self-absorbed Beautiful People of the town called on America to become as enlightened as they by supporting Hillary Clinton. They proudly donned their "I'm With Her" buttons.

‘Sanctuary’ means career criminals can run and hide

Donald Trump understood something that many Washington insiders missed. Many Americans and some naturalized citizens bristle at elected officials constantly defending the rights of non-Americans to migrate here illegally - and to be rewarded for breaking the law with a path to citizenship. Toward that end, and in deference to his campaign promises, Trump seems primed to deport undocumented immigrants and withhold some federal funds from sanctuary cities like San Francisco.

Our president-elect

No one is more supportive of young people involved in politics than I am. Year after year, I not only teach my own students but also speak at colleges and universities, eschewing political correctness but urging, begging even, for the students to passionately advocate the beliefs they hold and to become active participants in our democracy.

‘60 Minutes’ grills the new president

Donald Trump is a persistent critic of the media and is attacked for not granting them enough access. But three days after the election, there he was, the president-elect, recording a long interview with Lesley Stahl of CBS' "60 Minutes," whom he could expect to push, push, push from the left.

Turning the page

Donald Trump is the President-elect, and hate crime has been institutionalized. Throughout the nation, the populist has now taken the Torch of Freedom from Lady Liberty and uses it to vandalize with slogans "#Go back to Africa" "Trump, Whites only" "White America" and "Make America great again." Close to home and while working at the polls in Manteca, a young Latina Manteca Unified high school student was told by some voters, "if you speak a language other than English, you should not be allowed to vote," she was proudly wearing a sticker identifying her a bilingual worker.

‘Herding’ blinded pollsters

How did the national polls, which overwhelmingly predicted a Hillary Clinton victory, get the presidential election so wrong? A Capitol Weekly election postmortem panel Thursday gave me the opportunity to ask California pollsters unaffiliated with the bad national polls. Mark DiCamillo of the Field Poll saw the Bradley effect with female Trump voters. (The "Bradley effect" was born in 1982 when the late pollster Mervin Field proclaimed that voters would elect Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley to be California and America's first black governor. He was wrong, he believed, because voters would not admit to pollsters they supported George ...
