Ferritin level concerns one doctor, not another

DEAR DR. ROACH: What's the best advice when one doctor seems more concerned about something than another? I am a 49-year-old woman who doesn't smoke, is relatively healthy and who weighs about 150 pounds. I have had celiac disease since 2009 and hypothyroidism. I tend to run on the low end of normal with my ferritin levels. A recent reading was 37 ng/mL, but it's been 11 to 34 over the years, with a recent iron reading of 87 ug/dL. This concerns my neurologist, whom I see for severe restless leg syndrome. I currently take ...

Effort getting blacks killed

Despite the lack of evidence that there is an increase in cops shooting blacks, let alone shooting blacks unlawfully, a few recent killings of blacks by cops has spawned the so-called Black Lives Matter movement. But over the past 45 years, per the Centers for Disease Control, police killings of blacks are down 75 percent. What are on the increase, year-to-year, are cop killings.

CARLY FIORINA

SIMI VALLEY - Who is this Carly Fiorina? In the press filing center at the CNN Republican debate, journalists from around the country were asking reporter Carla Marinucci and me because we covered the former Hewlett-Packard CEO for the San Francisco Chronicle in 2010 when she ran for the U.S. Senate against California Democrat Barbara Boxer - and failed spectacularly by 1 million votes. Yet here she is, winning the first two GOP primary debates and burning past veteran politicians who have won brutal elections in big states. Can she actually win? And what's her special sauce?

Full retirement age for widows

About a month ago, I wrote a column in which I explained how "full retirement age" (the age at which a person can claim 100 percent of his or her Social Security retirement benefits) is going up.

Trump is Herbert Hoover

Here's a historical fact that Donald Trump, and many voters attracted to him, may not know: The last American president who was a trade protectionist was Republican Herbert Hoover. Obviously that economic strategy didn't turn out so well - either for the nation or the GOP.

My brush with Elon Musk

About five years ago, a close friend of mine and I had an idea for a television news program. As luck would have it, my friend had gone to high school with a guy who, at the time, just happened to be the president of NBC. We arranged to have drinks at a fancy hotel bar in Washington, just the three of us, to talk about the idea.

Was case of ‘bird lung’ an allergy or infection?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was a very active, healthy, young 68-year-old until March, when I was hospitalized for two weeks for bilateral pneumonia. I was told by the doctors at the hospital that it would take four to six weeks to get my health back. However, I experienced shortness of breath and bouts of coughing for months, and insisted on seeing a specialist three weeks ago. A CT scan and bronchoscopy showed symptoms typical of bird lung. We had a cockatiel for 17 years!
