Nobody left to like

There are too many faults stacked in Donald Trump's towering inferno. Republicans have trained themselves to downplay his negatives such that he seems poised to destroy the GOP. Hillary Clinton knows them well. During the debate Sunday night she recited a handy list of his sins: Trump never apologizes. He didn't make amends to the Khans, the Muslim Gold Star parents who lost a son in Iraq. He suggests crazy, unrealistic schemes like barring Muslims from entering the United States. He made fun of a disabled reporter and stoked the absurd "birther" rumors about America's first black ...

Is this what it takes?

Does it really take the most vulgar, rude, offensive, racist, bombastic, insensitive, unqualified, disrespectful boor ever to be nominated by a major party in our lifetimes to finally get a highly qualified woman into the White House?

3 ways life will get better

It was June of 1992, the Saturday night before the California primary. There was no more campaigning to be done for the night. It was the 50th birthday for Geoff Cowan, who would soon become the head of the Voice of America and later the Dean of the Annenberg School at USC. But the mood that evening was glum. Bill Clinton, one of the party guests, was running third in the national polls. It was only a month since Los Angeles exploded in violence.

Physical therapy needed to ease inflammation of pubic bones

DEAR DR. ROACH: For a year now, I have had such terrible pain in my pubic area and down my inner thighs. An X-ray (for another problem) showed that I have osteitis pubis. I have read about it online and found that there is no real treatment for it. My doctor prescribed hydrocodone with acetaminophen for me for a trip I recently took, and I couldn't see that it really helped. Tylenol has helped some, in that it helped me relax. Sometimes when it really flares up, I have trouble walking because of the pain, and I feel that ...

Mangling Trump talk on veterans

Staff Sgt. Chad Robichaux is a Marine who developed post-traumatic stress disorder in the aftermath of eight tours in Afghanistan. After years of suffering, he now runs a counseling program dedicated to helping veterans avoid suicide, divorce and other attendant problems. He knows from his own experience that a faith-based approach works. Our government - allergic to faith-based programs -isn't really interested, especially under President Barack Obama.

‘Hilary: The Movie’

Hillary Clinton has promised that in her first 30 days as president she will propose a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision, which she characterized as a "disaster for our democracy." Because Clinton has a better-than-even chance of being elected president, who am I to argue?

You, too, could vote for Donald Trump

The political press corps has known Bob Stern as the straight-arrow president of Los Angeles' Center for Governmental Studies who helped Jerry Brown create the Fair Political Practices Commission in 1974. Since the center closed its L.A. offices in 2011, Stern seems to have developed a devious side - or was it there all along? I ask, because in his "The November Election" course at UCLA extension, Stern managed to set up a scenario wherein a substantial majority - he thinks two-thirds of the class of westside liberals, his wife, Joan, says three-quarters - raised their hands when asked if they could ...

Hillary’s Red Army march of tax-hike destruction

You've got to hand it to Team Hillary Clinton. Its message discipline is awesome -- at least in terms of taxes. It reminds me of the orderly march of the Chinese Red Army on the way to battle.

Let the people roar: Trump won the night

We all have theories as to how Donald Trump got this far. Mine is that Trump has done well among white high school graduates because he acts the way people think they would act if they were billionaires. If Trump ever doubts himself, he never shows it. He calls people names because he knows he can get away with it. He acts as if having money takes away anguish - that is, he acts quite differently than most rich people I know.

Moderators: Are they referees or fighters?

The latest Gallup poll confirms that the level of trust in the media has reached another new low. The percentage of Republicans who hold a "great deal" or "fair amount" of trust in the press has dropped precipitously to 14 percent, begging the question: Who are the 14 percent who are comfortable with the nonstop tirade against them?
