Now controversial: ‘God Bless America’

It didn't used to be -- that's a phrase we use a lot these days, isn't it? - but the Fourth of July festivities bring out the angriest guff from the left. In 1991 Boston Globe arts critic (and aspiring poet) Patricia Smith decided to refashion the national anthem in the leftist rag The Nation.

Poisonous plants on your yard can can kill your dog

DEAR DIDI: We have a beautiful 10 week old Rottweiler puppy. She is so good and hasn't caused any problems which just amazes us. We have a large landscaped backyard where she plays all day while we are at work. Last week we came home to a lethargic dog. We thought she was just tired but by 9 o'clock at night she was drooling nonstop and just not acting right. After rushing her into an emergency vet and spending over $1,000 our little baby managed to survive a poisoning. Please remind people that some of our pretty ...

Feel safer? It’s easier to get parole, harder to buy bullets

Gov. Jerry Brown and the Democratic Legislature have a unique plan to enhance public safety in California. They have reduced the state prison population from close to 150,000 in 2010 to 113,000 now by downgrading what crimes put an offender in prison. Now they are pushing a ballot measure that would enable repeat serious and violent offenders to qualify for early release - to further reduce the state prison population. No worries, though, because they also are passing laws that make it harder or costlier for everyone to buy guns and ammunition.

Too big for federal brig

FBI Director James Comey was right to assert that "no reasonable prosecutor" would press criminal charges against Hillary Clinton. No reasonable prosecutor, former federal prosecutor William Otis, now a Georgetown University law professor, told me, wants to try a criminal case with the potential to tilt a national election.

What About Bernie Sanders?

It's strange how it happens almost overnight. One day, you've got television crews crowding for position, top correspondents big-footing out the juniors who were first assigned to what was viewed as a lost cause, and of course, crowds cheering.

Overthrow Establishment to fix American economy

Annual physical often a hands-on experience

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old female in fairly good health. I take statins to keep my cholesterol under control, and am being followed by an endocrinologist for a parathyroid problem, which also is under control. For the past two years, when I visit my physician for an annual wellness check, I have some blood work done before our visit and fill out a health risk assessment. Other than having my blood pressure taken, the doctor talks to me but does no other physical exam. My heart is not listened to, and no part of my body is touched ...

Leaving dogs outside overnight

DEAR DIDI: I am hoping you can help solve a disagreement that my husband and I have been having. We love your column and your answer will be our 'tiebreaker' of sorts. My husband thinks our dog should spend nights outside in the yard to protect our home. I feel sorry for him and want him in the house but my husband says I baby him too much. What do you think?
