Reefer madness & politics

For the first time since 1988, both major parties' nominees - Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump - say that they have never smoked or experimented with marijuana (without inhaling).

Are our children stats?

Last Thursday at the request of Supervisors, Moses Zapien, and Chuck Winn, I attended the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors Special Session on Education that was held at the San Joaquin County Office of Education's Wentworth Education Center (SJCOE) in Stockton. It was a public hearing, so I needed not an invitation, but I wouldn't have known about it, so I thank both Supervisors for personally inviting me.

Find support group for lingering pain of post-polio syndrome

DEAR DR. ROACH: My dad is 89 and had polio when he was 6. He had to learn to walk again. Over the years, I have watched the pain he has endured. His legs hurt so much that my mom and I would take turns punching the back of his legs, as they would cramp up like a rock. Losing muscle is a side effect of polio, and he has lost almost all of his. He has been in a wheelchair for about seven years. He cannot lie in bed because of a rotator cuff tear that hurts when he ...

Will drama win debates?

The first of three presidential debates won't happen until Sept. 26. Today, nearly six weeks beforehand, I safely can make these predictions. Hillary Clinton will show up for all three, as her campaign announced Monday. Donald Trump will show up, at least to most of them. Tuesday he told Time Magazine, "I will absolutely do three debates" - although he noted he has "to see the conditions." Most important, after each debate, the media will spend the next 24 to 48 hours debating what Trump really meant by his latest bizarre utterance and if that particular off-the-wall remark represents the ...

The nutty nominee

Is the Donald really getting "nuttier"? That's what the New York Post said today, claiming insiders as their source. I don't actually know any Donald Trump "insiders," although I do know some of the beleaguered professionals who are trying to gain some measure of control over a hopelessly inexperienced candidate.

Dangerous think tanks ahead

Monday's front-page New York Times story "Scholarship or Business? Think Tanks Blur the Line" reports that while think tanks in general "are seen as researchers independent of moneyed interests," some think tank biggies chase money from corporate donors. "And they are doing so while reaping the benefits of their tax-exempt status, sometimes without disclosing their connections to corporate interests."

Trump is our nation’s Carcinoma

Ruben Navarrette, a national recognized syndicated writer, published a syndicated column, "Have We Lost Sight of an American Hero?" which appeared in the Ventura County Star, August 3, 2016. I had a preview of it the night before, and I asked him to please retract. But no, like all journalists out there, he rose to the occasion but unfortunately chose the wrong topic. He went after the golden opportunity, the Khans, the Gold Star parents of Army Captain Humayun S. M. Khan who gave his life for our freedom, June 8, 2004.

High cholesterol one risk factor among many for heart disease

DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor recently suggested I start taking a statin. After reading some of the recent literature, it appears that statin therapy is more controversial than in the past. From my reading, 50 percent of heart attacks occur in folks with normal cholesterol levels. A re-evaluation of previous studies (such as Framingham) have shown all-cause mortality is better in folks with higher cholesterol. Since our bodies make over 80 percent of our cholesterol, it appears that those with higher levels might need those level for good health. And it seems many of the degenerative diseases of aging occur ...

They take your assets, then let you beg to get them back

Republican political consultant Mike Madrid isn't used to getting calls from the ACLU, and yet he has found himself working with the civil liberties group because some practices are so egregious that Republicans and Democrats should have no trouble finding common cause. The issue is civil asset forfeiture - also known as "policing for profit." The federal government can seize your property, and the only way you can get it back is to prove you are not guilty of a crime. California law prohibits local authorities from permanently seizing most property without a conviction, but there's a loophole in ...
