Man without a mandate

It's hard to patch together a mandate out of an election that most pollsters believe could have been won, maybe even easily, by another Democrat - Joe Biden, say, or Barack Obama or Bill Clinton. What is his real mandate? Not to elect brainiac women to the White House?

Laser treatments ‘probably not effective’ against nerve damage

DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to diabetes and radiation treatments for prostate cancer, I have nerve damage to both feet. I was on was Lyrica, and I had to switch to gabapentin 300 mg because of the cost of Lyrica: It was approximately $1,000 for a three-month supply. I also take Metanx. Why do dogs eat cat poop?

DEAR DIDI: We absolutely adore our Aussie. Her name is Precious. Unfortunately, Precious has a not so precious habit. She likes to eat cat poop from the kitty litter. She has become quite sneaky about it, in fact. She stalks the cat when she thinks he is heading for the litter box! Why does she do this and how do we stop it? -Frustrated Mom

What’s a good question?

What should reporters ask President-elect Donald Trump at his first post-election press conference scheduled for Jan. 11? The answer isn't as simple as it may seem. Trump has not held a formal news conference for six months. He postponed until January the news conference promised for December. He refers to the press on Twitter as "the dishonest media." Trump seems to enjoy sparring with the media more than responding to the media.

It’s now out with the old

The holidays are never easy for anyone except the Hallmark family, but this year seemed especially disquieting: Donald Trump acts like he's still playing bully in some schoolyard somewhere; fingers of blame point in all directions in both parties; and it's a dangerous world that is impossible to ignore. My son made me watch a documentary produced by Vice News about the Islamic State; terrifying doesn't begin to describe it. And Trump only needs one intelligence briefing a week. While 9-year-olds waving swords at a training camp where they've gone to learn to divide America in ...

Stanford rape judge demonstrates need for judicial independence

When Santa Clara Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky sentenced Brock Turner, a Stanford freshman convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster, to six months in jail, three years' probation and lifetime sex-offender registration in June, it was a national story. Legal insiders knew Turner would serve three months - not six - for a felony assault, which he conveniently blamed on Stanford's booze-fueled "party culture" rather than his own brutish behavior.

Different kind of journalism

There is standard progression in the world where journalism and politics intersect. After years of reporting and watching newsrooms shrink, many journalists go to work for the governments they covered, or for an elected official they covered, or for organization they covered and admire.

Winners & losers of 2016

Populism took the elites by surprise in 2016, so a review of this year's cultural winners and losers must begin with a very long list of arrogant entertainers who thought it was completely impossible for the American people to descend into a pit of despair and ignorance and elect Donald Trump. No one believed for a second the rich-and-famous losers who promised to move their arrogance to Canada or elsewhere if the Hillary Clinton juggernaut were to tank.
