President Obama lied to us

"If you like your health insurance, you can keep it. Period." Those words will haunt Barack Obama through the remainder of his term and probably achieve eternal life in books of memorable quotations.

Killing a rhino to save rhinos

Have you ever heard of the rabbit hunter's nightmare?A guy dreams that he and a few of his buddies have fanned out across some brushland to scare-up and shoot a few hares. They kill a couple, but then, one of the hunting buddies who'd headed down a slope into a thicket on the right suddenly comes bolting up the slope, all wild-eyed and screaming at the others: "Run, run - the rabbits have guns!"

Benghazi hoax begets more hoaxes

No lie. CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager told The New York Times that the segment was "as big a mistake as there has been" on the 45-year-old news staple. Given that "60 Minutes II" had to retract a 2004 report on the National Guard service of President George W. Bush, to the chagrin of anchorman Dan Rather, Fager essentially admitted to epic failure.

RINO wins and a dinosaur loses

What do Tuesday's resounding re-election of Republican Chris Christie as governor of Democrat-friendly New Jersey and the excruciating defeat of tea party stalwart and gubernatorial wannabe Ken Cuccinelli in once reliably Republican Virginia say about Republican chances of retaking the White House in 2016?

The brave men and women of the TSA

After last week's tragedy at LAX, can we all agree to stop beating up on the men and women of the TSA who are just trying to do their job, which is to protect you and me from being killed?

Monsanto’s absurdity reaches new heights

It was my privilege to go to Des Moines recently for a World Food Prize extravaganza recognizing Monsanto's work against global hunger. But wait, Monsanto is not a hunger-fighter. It's a predatory proliferator of proprietary and genetically engineered seeds.

War on religious freedom

Americans who believe in God had better wake up and realize that a well-orchestrated campaign is moving to fundamentally transform the United States into a scrupulously secular nation. If this succeeds, we will no longer enjoy our First Amendment right of "free exercise" of religion but will be forbidden to speak or display any prayers, Bible quotations or other evidences of religion in any public place or event.

Court packing & unpacking

Back in 1937, then President Franklin D. Roosevelt, frustrated with decisions of the Supreme Court majority blocking critical aspects of his New Deal program, announced that he would seek to expand the court to as many as 15 justices. Under the bill he proposed, the president would have the authority to appoint one new justice for every justice who was older than 70 years and 6 months - up to a total of six new justices.

Bullies going after the ‘fat kid’

San Francisco Supervisor Scott Wiener will always have a special place in my heart. Braving an onslaught of puns in a wiseacre nation, Wiener sponsored legislation to require that naked guys place a barrier between their butts and park seats. Later, he pushed for and won a ban on public nudity on city streets (except at events where people have grown to expect some exhibitionism). It was a gutsy move in a city where political correctness too often trumps common sense.
