Dangerous think tanks ahead

Monday's front-page New York Times story "Scholarship or Business? Think Tanks Blur the Line" reports that while think tanks in general "are seen as researchers independent of moneyed interests," some think tank biggies chase money from corporate donors. "And they are doing so while reaping the benefits of their tax-exempt status, sometimes without disclosing their connections to corporate interests."

Loving America by finding fault with it

I was sitting on a bus one summer, chatting with a man behind me who'd worked all over the world in the U.S. foreign service. Like many conversations today, ours turned eventually to the many problems with our country.

Trump is our nation’s Carcinoma

Ruben Navarrette, a national recognized syndicated writer, published a syndicated column, "Have We Lost Sight of an American Hero?" which appeared in the Ventura County Star, August 3, 2016. I had a preview of it the night before, and I asked him to please retract. But no, like all journalists out there, he rose to the occasion but unfortunately chose the wrong topic. He went after the golden opportunity, the Khans, the Gold Star parents of Army Captain Humayun S. M. Khan who gave his life for our freedom, June 8, 2004.

High cholesterol one risk factor among many for heart disease

DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor recently suggested I start taking a statin. After reading some of the recent literature, it appears that statin therapy is more controversial than in the past. From my reading, 50 percent of heart attacks occur in folks with normal cholesterol levels. A re-evaluation of previous studies (such as Framingham) have shown all-cause mortality is better in folks with higher cholesterol. Since our bodies make over 80 percent of our cholesterol, it appears that those with higher levels might need those level for good health. And it seems many of the degenerative diseases of aging occur ...

They take your assets, then let you beg to get them back

Republican political consultant Mike Madrid isn't used to getting calls from the ACLU, and yet he has found himself working with the civil liberties group because some practices are so egregious that Republicans and Democrats should have no trouble finding common cause. The issue is civil asset forfeiture - also known as "policing for profit." The federal government can seize your property, and the only way you can get it back is to prove you are not guilty of a crime. California law prohibits local authorities from permanently seizing most property without a conviction, but there's a loophole in ...

Where is the ‘Hillary lied, people died’ crowd?

The same clueless nitwits who, with no evidence, cried "Bush lied, people died!" are now ignoring overwhelming evidence of Hillary Clinton's violation of the Espionage Act and how that behavior imperiled national security. In George W. Bush's case, there is zero evidence of a "lie." In Clinton's case, as to a violation of the Espionage Act, her violation is clear-cut.

Media’s convention tilt is unmissable — again

It's an ironclad principle. Media coverage of the quadrennial Republican and Democratic conventions is a laboratory exercise to demonstrate how shamelessly partisan our political reporters truly are.

Is Libertarian ticket serious?

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson, the former New Mexico governor, and his running mate, Bill Weld, a former Massachusetts governor, bill themselves as the "credible alternative to ClinTrump." The two former GOP governors, who won re-election in bluish states, have a bounce in their step on the campaign trail. "Give us one term, America, and if after four years you decide you don't like peace, prosperity and freedom, you can always vote a Trump or a Hillary back into office again," Johnson mugs in a campaign video.

Who’s your mommy?

Hillary Clinton's advantage going into the final evening of the Democratic National Convention was her nonstop determination. The former first lady and secretary of state never gave up on her bid to become the first female American president. Unlike Donald Trump, she didn't just stumble into the nomination. She reached the spotlight through "steady leadership" - a euphemism for plodding on after personal scandal on an epic scale and a painful election loss in 2008.
