Obama on Orlando: It’s all about the guns

It did not take long for President Barack Obama to inject a plea for more gun control in his reaction to the Orlando terror massacre. In his five-minute, no-questions-taken-statement, Obama said: "Today marks the most deadly shooting in American history. The shooter was apparently armed with a handgun and a powerful assault rifle. This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship, or a movie theater, or in a nightclub. And we have to ...

How not to take blood pressure

DEAR DR. ROACH: Recently, I had my annual checkup and nervously had to wait a while. The doctor's assistant came in and proceeded to take my blood pressure. She then looked at me disparagingly and said: "Do you always have a high blood pressure"? Of course, when she said this it probably doubled. Why can't an assistant quietly enter the numbers into the laptop and let the doctor make the determination rather than leave the patient there wondering whether he or she is going to have a stroke at any minute? The doctor usually takes it before I ...

Sierra: 40M dead trees & counting

CRESSMAN - California's drought and a bark beetle epidemic have caused the largest die-off of Sierra Nevada forests in modern history, raising fears that trees could come crashing down on people or fuel deadly wildfires that could wipe out mountain communities.

Is Islamic terror America’s future?

If the cliches hold -- nothing succeeds like success, the past is prologue -- this generation will not likely see an end to the jihadist terror that was on display at Pulse in Orlando on Sunday.

Stanford offender got life sentence

The victim fought back with words of rage. "I thought there's no way this is going to trial; there were witnesses, there was dirt in my body, he ran but was caught," she wrote in a 12-page statement at the sentencing of Brock Turner, the former Stanford student convicted of sexually assaulting her. "He's going to settle, formally apologize, and we will both move on. Instead, I was told he hired a powerful attorney, expert witnesses, private investigators who were going to try and find details about my personal life to use against me."

Diet, alcohol and gout

DEAR DR. ROACH: After two major bouts of gout, my husband was treated with Medrol and colchicine, and has resorted to a low-purine diet in order to decrease the frequency of gout attacks, with their attendant pain and potential renal damage. He completely avoids beef, pork, lamb, mushrooms and rich seafood such as scallops. Chicken and turkey are OK. On this dietary regimen he has not experienced gouty episodes. His diet is quite satisfying, for the butchers today excel at making "meat" products from chicken and turkey. He takes 50 mg of allopurinol daily, even though his uric acid level ...

Fingerprinting Is racist?

Former Attorney General Eric Holder has come out against proposals in Chicago and New Jersey to require fingerprint background checks of drivers for ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Lyft. Why would President Obama's onetime top lawman come out against regulation that is supposed to protect the riding public? Credit the intersection of two forces. First, Holder's tony corporate law firm, Covington & Burling, represents Uber. Also, as Holder sees it, requiring drivers to submit fingerprints may "have a discriminatory impact on communities of color."

Civics lesson needed in San Jose

"My nose is broken. I have bruises and scratches all over. I got knocked in the head a lot," Santa Clara's Juan Hernandez, 38, told me. He suffered a mild concussion. That's the price Hernandez paid for attending the infamous Donald Trump rally in San Jose last week at which protesters were seen burning flags and Trump hats, pelting a supporter with an egg and mobbing people who were doing what civics teachers tell students citizens are supposed to do. For his trouble, Hernandez was called names, beaten and bloodied. For dessert, he got to hear politicians suggest ...

‘Self-Inflicted’ email mess

Dana Milbank and Ruth Marcus are both Yale-educated reporters-turned-columnists at The Washington Post. They view the world through the same lens. This sometimes means they can write pretty much the same column. It also means they both have a huge blind spot when it comes to sympathizing with Hillary Clinton.
