Democracy at grassroots level

American democracy is the gritty history of workaday folks who get fed up with the stuffed suits, get organized, and get moving to stop the thievery. Gutsy, grassroots confrontation is necessary for reclaiming, maintaining, and advancing our democratic values.

Aluminum exposure poses no risk to healthy people

DEAR DR. ROACH: For about 30 years, I have heard I should avoid contact with aluminum for sustained good health. Is there science or proven studies of adverse health effects behind these recommendations? Or is avoiding contact with aluminum in deodorant or cookware an incorrect or unsupported assertion that someone once made and that has taken on momentum, periodically resurfacing in articles and in emails? I am aware that exposure to some heavy metals is bad for us and must be avoided -- for example, lead from paint chips could be eaten by children or pets, or lead dust when sanding ...

California’s new death row

California has a new death row; it's called Virginia. Anti-death penalty advocates, federal judges and defense attorneys have been so successful at blocking capital punishment in California that a San Quentin death row inmate has more to fear from being extradited for a capital murder to another state than seeing his sentence carried out here. There has been no execution in California since a federal judge effectively halted the practice in 2006.

Fr. Serra’s unsaintly history

Why Obama Won’t Stay at the Waldorf when in NYC

Although every U.S. president since Herbert Hoover has stayed at the famous luxury Waldorf Astoria Hotel when visiting New York City, President Obama will not be bunking there this week. Along with hundreds of American officials who used to occupy whole floors of the Waldorf during the September meetings of the U.N. General Assembly, Obama will move to a different hotel.

Is testosterone therapy worth the risk for men?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old male who gets weekly testosterone injections. My semiannual blood work comes back fine. I have no side effects except that I lose my temper with people easier now. I have a little more energy and sex drive. My doctor believes that since he has me on Arimidex to keep my estrogen level low, testosterone is not harmful to me. I wanted another opinion, since all I hear now is that testosterone supplements can cause increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Does the Arimidex make testosterone safer? -- J.H.

The 25 percent problem

The last round of polls are leading the more optimistic members of the chattering class to wonder if Donald Trump may have peaked. He's still ahead of the pack, but he seems to have hit a plateau at around 25 percent with Republican voters, which isn't going down (except in the Quinnipiac poll, where he went down from 28 percent to 25 percent).
