DEAR DIDI: Why don't dogs shed tears when they cry? -Manteca Dog Lover
DEAR DIDI: Our young granddaughter is 6 years old and she LOVES dogs. Her favorite thing to do is hug them! She just wraps her arms around every dog she meets and looks so happy. My son and I disagree on whether this behavior should be curbed or not. One of us believes it is important to let her express love and kindness to animals and one of us is fearful that she is crossing lines and being too familiar with dogs that are not a part of her family. We love your column and would appreciate your opinion on ...
Five years ago, Silicon Valley was rocked by a wave of "brogrammer" bad behavior, when overfunded, highly entitled, mostly white and male startup founders did things that were juvenile, out of line and just plain stupid. Most of these activities – such as putting pornography into PowerPoint slides – revolved around the explicit or implied devaluation and harassment of women and the assumption that heterosexual men's privilege could or should define the workplace. The recent "memo" scandal out of Google shows how far we have yet to go.
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are taking a cruise around South America that includes several stops in Brazil. We both are 72 and in good health. What is your opinion about our getting the yellow fever vaccine? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it "should be given cautiously to people older than 60." I don't understand why. -- P.M.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother is very concerned about the upcoming solar eclipse; due to all the warnings about not watching it with the naked eye, she is afraid that one of us will "accidentally look at the sky and go blind." All the articles on the internet seem to deal with eye safety while actually watching the eclipse. While I understand that it would be best not to look at the sun at all, I am pretty sure that accidentally glancing at it for a second or two would be unlikely to cause permanent, total blindness. Would you be ...
DEAR DIDI: Our Golden Retriever is the sweetest dog. He loves people and gets along with other dogs, most of the time. Except when we are on walks he becomes a whole different dog. He suddenly lunges, barks insanely and scares people. We've worked with a couple of trainers and nothing has changed. How do we fix this? - Concerned Parents in Lodi
Our very secular national media have a favorite narrative when it comes to "hate speech" and religion. Since 9/11, our national sin is "Islamophobia." Anti-Semitism continues to exist in isolated pockets, but it's so ... yesterday. "Hate speech" against Muslims is now a top-shelf matter for the politically concerned.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 41-year-old man living with clinical depression and chronic anxiety. Though my condition has been well-maintained through cognitive behavioral therapy as well as medication, I have a great deal of difficulty sleeping at night. A different medicine, Remeron, left me unable to shake the grogginess at daybreak. My doctor has since switched me to a low dose of Seroquel (25 mg per day) for sleep. I recently came across an article on social media that suggests that studies have connected this use of Seroquel to Parkinson's disease, cardiac issues and something called neuroleptic malignant ...
