The Lesson of Kim Davis

Raising her arms in a sign of victory, Kim Davis - the now-famous Kentucky clerk who was jailed for contempt when she refused to obey a court order that she (and every clerk in the state) issue licenses to same-sex couples - was released from jail this week. Her freedom came not because the district judge concluded she was right, but because Davis' office deputies were in fact granting licenses consistent with the court order in her absence.

Newsom is no Kim Davis

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee complained on ABC's "This Week" that both Gavin Newsom and Kim Davis broke marriage laws but there's a double standard. The GOP presidential hopeful put it this way: "You've got Democrats who ignored the law when it was the law to have traditional marriage. Gavin Newsom, in San Francisco as mayor, performed same-sex weddings even though it was illegal. Did he ever get put in jail? He most certainly did not."

Chikungunya not likely cause of chronic diarrhea

DEAR DR. ROACH: In January 2014, I was bitten by a mosquito in the Caribbean and came down with the Chikungunya virus, which I still have. I took naproxen for about three months for the Chikungunya from April to July 2014. In August, I started having chronic diarrhea, which continues to this day. I have approximately three watery diarrhea attacks per day and must go to the bathroom ASAP three to four times over the period of an hour or two, with each attack.

Trump’s no outlier

There are those who would have you believe that Donald Trump is an aberration among Republican presidential contenders - the black sheep uncle who shows up half-drunk at family gatherings, insults the guests, scandalizes the women, and otherwise brings dishonor to the clan.

Bond never stopped agitating

The late civil rights activist Julian Bond, who passed away last month, lived his life as a tireless champion of the oppressed and maligned, a battle-worn warrior for civil rights, equality, and social justice. Bond fought the good fight, and at the still-youthful age of 75, he completed his course.

The risk and reward of blood sugar control goals

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read about a follow-up study on the ACCORD population that showed that after a few years of follow-up, people in the tight blood-sugar-control arm had fewer heart attacks and need for stents. Can you comment on this? I want to know if I should keep my A1c lower. -- S.B.

Dog behaves in class, not at home

DEAR DIDI: I have a 5 year old Standard Poodle. We have taken many AKC classes and he always excels in a class environment. He has titles and graduates with honors. His behavior at home, however, is not exemplary. We are not sure how this is possible or what to do about it. -Stumped in Manteca

PIER SHOOTING

"We're here not only for Kate, to keep her memory alive, but to have something done," a shellshocked James Steinle pronounced at a Tuesday news conference on the steps of San Francisco City Hall. On July 1, Steinle, his daughter, Kate, and a friend were taking an evening stroll on Pier 14. Kate Steinle, 32, took a selfie. Moments later, a bullet pierced her aorta. She died in a hospital. The San Francisco district attorney charged an immigrant who was here illegally and who had seven felony convictions and five prior deportations with first-degree murder. Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, who ...
