Pope gets served House Specialty

With his gentle grace, disarming humility, and penchant for saying "God bless America" like he means it, Pope Francis appeared to sweep Washington off its feet. Cheering throngs accompanied his every move. The powerful and powerless alike made a fuss.

Business financial ratios

Much like the speedometer, fuel gauge and oil pressure gauge on your car, financial ratios provide a useful way to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in the performance and solvency of your business. Also like cars, different businesses are conceived and designed to travel at different speeds. Try to run your diesel pickup (or Prius, to be politically sensitive) in an Indy race and you will soon realize this fundamental truth.

Shoot first; ask questions later

After America learned of the latest mass shooting at an Oregon community college, President Barack Obama delivered remarks in which he lamented the loss of good, innocent people and then added: "Somehow this has become routine. ... We've become numb to this." By the next day, Obama had a remedy: "Be a single-issue voter."

The role of alternative therapies in cancer treatment

DEAR DR. ROACH: I wonder why you never talk about holistic measures to prevent illnesses, such as cancer. I just read an article by an oncologist who said there are certain anti-cancer supplements that work, including vitamin D, magnolia extract and artichoke extract, all of which have been shown in laboratory studies to kill a variety of cancer cells, including colon, breast and liver cancers, and leukemia. Artichoke extract also contains cynarin, which decreases inflammation. Other compounds that can reduce cancer growth are black cumin seed oil and bee propolis, which is rich in caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), chrysin ...

Media trust hits all-time low

I’m going to miss Boehner

I am going to miss John Boehner as speaker of the House. The GOP looks like the fun party with its ring-a-ding leader and his dash of Dean Martin. Boehner even sauntered into his resignation news conference Friday while crooning, "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay. My oh my, what a wonderful day." The speaker chose not to cling to power but to walk away without compromising his supporters.

Democracy at grassroots level

American democracy is the gritty history of workaday folks who get fed up with the stuffed suits, get organized, and get moving to stop the thievery. Gutsy, grassroots confrontation is necessary for reclaiming, maintaining, and advancing our democratic values.

Aluminum exposure poses no risk to healthy people

DEAR DR. ROACH: For about 30 years, I have heard I should avoid contact with aluminum for sustained good health. Is there science or proven studies of adverse health effects behind these recommendations? Or is avoiding contact with aluminum in deodorant or cookware an incorrect or unsupported assertion that someone once made and that has taken on momentum, periodically resurfacing in articles and in emails? I am aware that exposure to some heavy metals is bad for us and must be avoided -- for example, lead from paint chips could be eaten by children or pets, or lead dust when sanding ...

California’s new death row

California has a new death row; it's called Virginia. Anti-death penalty advocates, federal judges and defense attorneys have been so successful at blocking capital punishment in California that a San Quentin death row inmate has more to fear from being extradited for a capital murder to another state than seeing his sentence carried out here. There has been no execution in California since a federal judge effectively halted the practice in 2006.
