Europe’s future on the line

The terrorist who hijacked a truck in Berlin and ran over and killed 12 people, maiming and wounding 48 more, in that massacre in the Christmas market, has done more damage than he could imagine.

Terrorists wage war on Christmas

2016 hasn't been a hot year for discussions of a rhetorical war on Christmas in our malls or public schools. Maybe we've tuned out the secular hostility in our culture. We've gone from banning Linus reading from the Gospel of Luke to banning Christmas to banning Santa Claus to banning even the thought of a holiday, since it might not be for others.

The real saboteurs of a Trump foreign policy

When it is too cold to walk an indoor dog?

DEAR DIDI: We have a male pitbull that is 3 years old. He is gray colored and a mostly indoor dog. We take a 2 mile walk every morning before I go to work. This means we begin our walks around 6:30 a.m. and we both enjoy it immensely. My wife is concerned that it is too cold in the mornings now to take him for a walk. She points out that I wear gloves, a coat, and a scarf but the dog is "naked". He does have very short hair. Do I need to halt our walks ...

Lightheadedness may be due to ‘pacemaker syndrome’

DEAR DR. ROACH: In October 2014, I had my aortic valve replaced, and a pacemaker was put in. I was put on 100 mg of metoprolol daily -- then 50 mg, then 25 mg. I have been off this medicine for six months.

Foreign meddling in our vote? It’s simply payback time for USA

Even in an election year as shot through with conspiracy theories as this one, it would have been hard to imagine a bigger bombshell than Russia intervening to help Donald Trump. But that's exactly what the CIA believes happened, or so unnamed "officials brief on the matter" told the Washington Post.

Power of the President

For decades, political science students have been taught the late Richard Neustadt's battle-tested maxim that the power of the president is the power to persuade. I don't think he ever imagined Twitter, and he certainly didn't imagine a Donald Trump in the White House. What for decades looked like a challenge requiring skill and leadership turns out to require nothing more than a Twitter account and a nation of followers.

Rangel doesn’t blame ‘whitelash’

Donald Trump once called the Rev. Al Sharpton "a con man," meaning that Sharpton plays the race card less out of sincerity and more as a method to make demands and extract concessions.

A general misunderstanding

Last week's media chew toy involved the number of former generals President-elect Donald J. Trump has nominated for his cabinet. The ABC News website announced Trump "would have the most generals in the White House since World War II." What is that near-record number? Two. Yes, a whopping two among 14 announced cabinet-level picks.

Our one-party state

Donald J. Trump did America a huge favor by winning the White House in November. If Hillary Clinton had won, there would have been little stopping America from turning into a one-party country - a national political equivalent of California. As it is, California is turning into San Francisco, where outsiders stand zero chance of penetrating the liberal-only wall that surrounds City Hall.
