Cowboys varsity comes within inches of win

1985: Martz scores 3 TDs in EU win

Fifty years ago, on September 23, 1965, Manteca High, led by the bruising running of Steve Smalley, dumped St. Mary's High 34-7 here. Terry Brumley passed for two touchdowns and scored one himself. The aerials went to John Newton and Chuck Scharmann, while Newton passed to Rick Fatzer for another. Smalley scored once and was the leading ball carrier for the Buffaloes. Buffalo end Jim Hill nailed a Ram ball carrier in the end zone for a safety.

1915: Sand storm hurts Manteca pitching in loss

100 years ago, on September 13, 1915, owing to the absence of Kyle Potter and having the new battery at work without much practice, combined with the difficulty of pitching against the sand storm, the game between the Stockton Athletics and the Merchants presented no great plays on either side. While Libhart got two of the six hits for Manteca, the local nine still lost the game, 5 to 1.

1945: Manteca blanks Naval Annex 19-0

Sixty years ago, on September 8, 1955, Gene Peterson, Manteca's highly-heralded halfback, has decided to give up gridiron play, at least for a year. Peterson, all-Big Eight Conference star for two years at Modesto Junior College, was one for the finest running backs ever to come out of Manteca High. He is presently a junior at College of the Pacific.

Sixty years ago, on August 29, 1955, fifty Manteca High varsity football hopefuls ran four laps and were ready for whatever Coaches Frank LeSan, Jim Fairchild and Joe Gambetta had in store for them at 9 a.m. today. The Buffaloes should have plenty of experience and beef in the line this year, with six first-line veterans returning. Delbert Harper, Graham Bolding, Bill Gaylor, Jack Leach, Raymond Cruz and Kenny Berna will be back vying for top berths. The backfield will have four returning veterans: Bill Marples, Ron Blakemore, James Russell, Ken Summers or Hank Tsugawa.
