ARE YOU READY?
The pads were popping at Ripon Christian Friday afternoon as the Ripon Knights practiced full-contact tackling drills. Head coach Todd Keast and the Knights kick off the 2009 season Aug. 22 at Gustine High, where the Redskins will be waiting. Ripon will face another road test in the Delhi Raiders Aug. 29 before returning to RC for the first contest in front of the home faithful.
ON THE LINE
The East Union high varsity linemen ran through conditioning and blocking drills Tuesday at East Union while the skill position players hit up the weight room. The Sac-Joaquin Section imposed dead period for fall season athletes begins today and lasts until Aug. 17. Pre-conditioning for football begins Aug. 17 and lasts until the Aug. 24, the first day of practice.
RETURNING TO FORM
Kyle Harman, ever the perfectionist, wasn't exactly thrilled. He wasn't thoroughly disappointed either. Coming off a month-long hiatus from golf because of a groin injury, the soon-to-be East Union High senior took second in the San Joaquin Valley Junior Invitational in Fresno Monday and Tuesday. East Union was back on the gridiron Saturday at Modesto Junior College as part of the MJC passing league tournament. The Lancers made short work of Turlock in the second game of the day. The first and second-team offenses both turned in a pair of touchdowns, while the first and second-team defenses held the Bulldogs to just one score. Nicole Vanni, the 2009 Bulletin All-Area Most Valuable Player, is quite possibly the best girls soccer player ever to compete at Sierra High.
ABOVE & BEYOND
It's hard to look back on everything the 2009 Bulletin All-Area Track Athletes of the Year, Sierra High hurdler Courtney Whitlock and Weston Ranch hurdler Angell Mayfield, were able to accomplish over the course of the season and not be thoroughly impressed.
LEADERS OF THE PACK
One put the finishing touches on an outstanding high school career. The other is just getting started. Sierra High teammates Josh Revives and Kara Hall are the 2009 Bulletin All-Area Swimmers of the Year. After qualifying for his third-straight Sac-Joaquin Section trials in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events, Revives ended his career at Tokay High May 16 with a 15th place finish in the 200. On April 27, baby-faced Kyle Harman became the man. The South all-star team snapped the North's six-game winning streak with a 19-3 win Saturday at the University of the Pacific, the site of the 36th Annual Lions Club All-Star Football Classic. STOCKTON - Sierra High snapped a seven-game losing streak to hated rival Manteca last fall, but on Saturday members from both teams along with East Union will look to preserve the North's recent string of dominance of the South in the 36th Annual Lions Club All-Star Football Classic at the University of the Pacific.
