SCRIMMAGE SCRAMBLE
The Manteca, Sierra and East Union High football programs held their annual intrasquad scrimmages Saturday at each of the respective schools.
TOURNEY TIME
The mercury hovered around triple digits Saturday afternoon at Sierra High, where the T'Wolves boys soccer program hosted the 17th Annual Timberwolves Cup.
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Head coach Dolores Baluyut led the Lathrop girls tennis team into its first varsity action Friday afternoon at Union Road Tennis Courts. The Spartans faced Kimball of Tracy. Lathrop squares off with Valley Oak League rival East Union at home Tuesday.
LANCERS IMPRESS
Numbers aren't supposed to lie, but in this case they do. Despite outshooting visiting Turlock and, at times, dominating ball possession, East Union fell victim to some unlucky breaks and breakdowns on defense in its 4-3 preseason loss at Dino Cunial Field Thurday. STARTING OVER
The 2008 soccer season was a rough one for area teams. Manteca, fresh of its Valley Oak League championship campaign, battled injuries to key players all season and quickly fell out of the race for a Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoff spot. Rival East Union and Ripon of the Trans Valley League both finished third in their respective conferences, but neither qualified for the postseason. The Manteca High soccer program held its 2nd Annual Band of Buffaloes Alumni Game Tuesday at Guss Schmiedt Field. The White Team won, 6-5, after Jesus Perez scored the last of his three goals on a penalty kick in stoppage time. Also scoring goals for the White were Juan Carlos Ramirez (two) and Kolby Murphy. Comcast to televise Manteca-Oakdale game
The Comcast Hometown Network will televise 13 Northern California high school football games this fall, and among them will be the Oct. 30 matchup between Manteca and Oakdale at The Corral.
Changes made to Section playoffs
The anticipated realignment of Sac-Joaquin Section conferences won't come to pass until the 2010-11 school year, but changes to the football playoff format has been approved to begin this fall.
ARE YOU READY?
The pads were popping at Ripon Christian Friday afternoon as the Ripon Knights practiced full-contact tackling drills. Head coach Todd Keast and the Knights kick off the 2009 season Aug. 22 at Gustine High, where the Redskins will be waiting. Ripon will face another road test in the Delhi Raiders Aug. 29 before returning to RC for the first contest in front of the home faithful.
ON THE LINE
The East Union high varsity linemen ran through conditioning and blocking drills Tuesday at East Union while the skill position players hit up the weight room. The Sac-Joaquin Section imposed dead period for fall season athletes begins today and lasts until Aug. 17. Pre-conditioning for football begins Aug. 17 and lasts until the Aug. 24, the first day of practice.
RETURNING TO FORM
Kyle Harman, ever the perfectionist, wasn't exactly thrilled. He wasn't thoroughly disappointed either. Coming off a month-long hiatus from golf because of a groin injury, the soon-to-be East Union High senior took second in the San Joaquin Valley Junior Invitational in Fresno Monday and Tuesday.
