Sierra serves up revenge

The Sierra High boys tennis team has earned the right to rest. Rivalry week was a grind. The Timberwolves won their second match in as many days, this one a 5-4 decision at East Union under cloudy skies. Sierra began the week with a shutout loss to Manteca, but rebounded with victories over fellow Manteca Unified schools Lathrop and East Union. Thursday's triumph wasn't without suspense, though. The match went down to the last pairing, ...

T’wolves ranked top-10 nationally

Feared regionally, the Sierra softball team now has the respect of national pundits, too. For now, at least. The Timberwolves began Wednesday on a high, moving up five spots to No. 9 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Softball Rankings following victories over Kimball and Weston Ranch last week. Then came the crash. The Timberwolves' 11-game, season-long winning streak was snapped Wednesday evening by East Union. Sophomore Cherish Burks homered and had the game-sealing outfield ...

Extra special win for Spartan baseball

LATHROP – The Lathrop baseball team didn't need to beat Ryan Stevenson. It just needed to outlast the Mother Lode's best player and Sonora's fiery ace, which it did in a thrilling 2-1 victory in 10 innings on Wednesday. Stevenson was his usual dominant self, striking out seven Spartans while allowing one run. But he wouldn't factor in the end result. Reliever Evan Estes plunked Lathrop's Preston Rizo to start the 10th inning. After a ...

EXPANDING HER RANGE

Cody Norman knew Courtney Range was a special player. Everyone did. Her name and game are posted all over the Internet. There are YouTube clips, scouting reports and profiles and headlines galore. What Norman didn't know was how the St. Mary's transfer would gel with her new teammates; how she would adjust to the level of competition; or how hard she'd be willing to work. Range was already a bona fide Division I talent when ...

Groundbreaking Grappler

LATHROP – Jasmine Ivey's season was turned upside down in an instant. Worse yet, her mentor had made the hours-long drive to Lemoore High School, arriving just in time to see her emotional setback in the semifinal round of the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championship. "That match went so quickly. I got the first takedown and then she rolled over and it was … over," the Lathrop junior said. "I was like, 'What just happened?' ...
