1980: Lawton leads EU softball past Tracy

Thirty years ago, on March 16, 1980, senior outfielder Diane Lawton slammed a triple and two singles to help East Union High's ladies' softball team to an easy 17-4 victory over Tracy High in Tracy. Lancer coach Bob Lee, whose club was aided by several Tracy errors and a bundle of walks, expressed satisfaction with his troops' efforts. Julie Tolentino handled pitching chores for the Lancers and went the distance. She also helped herself at the plate, banging out three hits and three RBI to go with Lawton's four runs batted in.

1950: Buff baseball opens season with win over Lodi

Ninety years ago, on March 12, 1920, the San Joaquin-Stanislaus Counties baseball league has been formed and the first game will be played April 4. The plan outlined two weeks ago did not materialize so the new league will be composed of Manteca, Tracy, Newman, Modesto and Keyes. For the Manteca team, P. J. Peltier has been re-elected manager and C. L. Callendar has been chosen secretary. 1950: Buffaloes win first hoop title in 14 years

Thirty years ago, on March 5, 1980, Manteca High's senior front line partners Fred Nelson and Mitch Crawford, along with East Union High jumping-jack Kelly Stewart, topped the list of selections to the annual all-Valley Oak League basketball team, which was chosen Tuesday night by the league's coaches in Modesto.
