1980: Lawton leads EU softball past Tracy

Thirty years ago, on March 16, 1980, senior outfielder Diane Lawton slammed a triple and two singles to help East Union High's ladies' softball team to an easy 17-4 victory over Tracy High in Tracy. Lancer coach Bob Lee, whose club was aided by several Tracy errors and a bundle of walks, expressed satisfaction with his troops' efforts. Julie Tolentino handled pitching chores for the Lancers and went the distance. She also helped herself at the plate, banging out three hits and three RBI to go with Lawton's four runs batted in.

An indication of things to come

After six and a half years of puttering around great bass fishing grounds like a sophomore too scared to ask the senior he really likes to dance, I made a move to dance with bass.

Thirty years ago, on March 5, 1980, Manteca High's senior front line partners Fred Nelson and Mitch Crawford, along with East Union High jumping-jack Kelly Stewart, topped the list of selections to the annual all-Valley Oak League basketball team, which was chosen Tuesday night by the league's coaches in Modesto.
