Pitching anchors Manteca majors

Pitching depth is essential for teams to make it out of the consolation bracket, and Manteca Little League's major division A's proved on Tuesday that they have no shortage of arms in their 6-1 victory over the Lathrop Giants at Neil Hafley School.

Part II of Lund’s adventure through Canada

Before I was even 200 kilometers from the Skeena River, I knew fishing would be tough. Everything draining into it was rich and roaring. The Skeena would be a torrent. I was right, but I made myself a sandwich and waded out a couple feet to toss in the biggest fly in my box anyway. To my right was the slowly decomposing carcass of a beautifully (even in death) colored steelhead. The red went almost ...

ATHLETICS HANG ON

Highlighted by Brandon Elliott's inside-the-park home run, a spectacular diving catch from Kevin Peck and Danny Gouveia's complete game, the first-place Athletics moved to 10-2 on the season with a 6-5 win over the Twins Thursday at Sierra High. The Manteca Babe Ruth 14-15-year-old division resumes play Saturday at Manteca High when the A's meet the third-place Giants. The top three teams, the A's, Dodgers and Giants, are currently separated by just a game and ...

Holmes leads wire to wire for third win of season

Last season, after incurring a flat tire, Escalon's Eric Holmes was somehow able to claw his way back through the field to earn a hard fought, come-from-behind victory on the tight confines of the.375-mile bullring at Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, Ore. This year, the defending NASCAR Camping World Series West champion followed a much easier path by jumping out in front and staying there for all 150 laps to win last Saturday's Toyota/Bi-Mart 150 presented by NAPA.

Garcia takes second at state

Alex Garcia is 65 pounds worth of proof that perseverance pays off. The 11-year-old from Lathrop and nephew of former Manteca High standouts Vince and Benny Garcia steadily improved on the wrestling mat all season, and it culminated into an impressive second-place finish in the Dave Schultz Kids Freestyle State Tournament at Selland Arena in Fresno this past weekend. The youngest of Garcia grapplers had to get by two combatants he previously had trouble with ...

From Mars to Middle Earth, Lund settles into Canada

For a split second I was on Mars. There were noises. I was in some sort of cocoon, simultaneously hot and cold. I was in my tent, in the back of my truck 25 miles north of the Washington border. Things like that happen when you spend over 11 hours driving over a 13-hour period with only a few stops for gas and to poke rivers with hooks. My trip to Alaska started as one ...
