1980: Joe Wickham 7th in Formula Vee racing

Ninety years ago, on April 12, 1920, Manteca started the ball season right by winning the first game they played. The game was with Escalon and while this team is not a member of the league, it is a good fast team and has won all the games played this season before this game. A large crowd turned out and cheered lustily. The score at the close stood 7 to 2 in favor of the home boys. Elmer Blodgett started off right, pitching a first class game. He pitched all of last season and was a big factor in winning ...

Perfect time to spend on the water

I don't know many bass fishermen that aren't excited about going fishing with the weather we've been having this week. All the lakes and rivers should have fish up shallow either spawning or looking to spawn. The hardest decision I have, is deciding where I want to fish! We're truly lucky to live around so many great fisheries. Last month while sitting in Jiffy Lube I overheard two gentlemen talking about fishing and living in Manteca. They both agreed that there are very few places that offer great weather and great fishing like the central valley ...

1950: Payan fans 14 batters in Buffaloes win

Eighty years ago, on April 4, 1930, the Hughson Union High nine nosed out the local Manteca High Buffaloes and won the third C.I.F. game of the season by a 12 to 11 game in Hughson. The Hughson boys were hitting the ball quite regularly, getting six runs off Fred Theiler and six off Joe Abreu, who pitched for the Mantecans. They pitched fairly good ball but were given little support in the field. In the sixth frame, the Mantecans started a rally and scored eight runs before they could be stopped. Theiler and Joe Bettencourt got three ...

Encouragement in a new endeavour

I told a former student that it's important to be passionate about something other than your career, so in case work goes bad, or the exuberance with which you jumped into said career wanes, you're not left with nothing.

1940: Guisto homers twice in Buffaloes win

Seventy years ago, on March 28, 1940, in a wild and wooly game that saw both nines score at will, the Manteca High hickory stickers finally came through with a close 12-11 win over their rivals from Tracy High. The lead changed hands several times at the outset of the game and both pitchers were hit unmercifully. "Frenchy" Guisto poked out a pair of four-ply swats besides gathering a triple and two singles for a perfect day at the plate. It was the only sporting event that came to a head over the past week. All other scheduled events were ...
