Thirty years ago, on May 24, 1980, East Union High's 1980 football season nearly went up in smoke--literally--when a fire swept through a metal storage shed and team locker area in the boys' locker room at the Union Road campus. The blaze broke out between 11:15 and 11:30 am and, according to Captain Ron Waddle of the Manteca Fire Department, the first alarm sounded at 11:32 am. Lancer varsity football coach Vern Gebhardt said that although the investigation is continuing, preliminary reports indicate the fire may have started when a smoldering cigarette was tossed between the ...
Twenty years ago, on May 19, 1990, the "old" Tony Dominguez returned to the ring - which meant he didn't stay there very long. The professional boxer from Manteca only needed two solid connections with his powerful left hand to send Canada's Allan Harper crashing to the canvas in the first round of the 152-pound main event at the Stockton Civic Auditorium. Harper didn't get up in time to beat the count and Dominguez earned his 10th straight pro victory. The stunning win thrilled the heavily pro-Dominguez crowd, which had wondered whether the 27 year-old still had the ...
Over the last few years I have seen increasing numbers of wild pigs while out on my outdoor excursions. As I understand it, wild pigs weren't very common in California until William Randolph Hearst imported some Russian Wild Boar to stock his private game preserve at Hearst Castle.

Seventy years ago, on May 10, 1940, Coach Larry Siemering's fighting Manteca High Buffaloes were back in the thick of the Modesto Sub-league pennant chase as they downed the Oakdale High nine, 9-2, at the Almond City. Bill Blodgett hurled steady ball for the Green and White and gave up only six hits to the Mustangs. He struck out 10 and walked three. Frankie Teicheira, second sacker, and Perry Tipton, catcher, led the Buffalo hitters for the afternoon with a trio of singles in five trips to the plate.
