We would also like to thank all who entered vehicles and those who came by to view especially under questionable skies. Thank you also goes out to "Cabral Motors" ...

Liked column on vehicles

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, I liked your column of your autos. I never did want a Pontiac, I was always looking at the Studebaker Golden Hawks and the Avanti and finally the Gran Tourismo. But all of these cars were beyond the means of a high schooler and serving in the military right after graduation, ruled out a job that would allow serving and auto ownership. Nice story. Statistics show we’re going down wrong road

Editor, Manteca Bulletin The expression "statistics don't lie but liars use statistics" has been tossed about over the last few months. Probability and statistics is the least popular course that are recommended for college students. Engineering, some programming, and economics students are required to take this course. Very few colleges offer higher level coursework in statistical analysis. Most people learn through on-the-job training, which is the most unreliable method of learning. Even CSU-Stanislaus does not ...

Need tougher penalties for SBS perpetrators

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, With this being shaken baby syndrome (SBS) awareness week, and me being the mother of a victim of SBS I feel it is my duty to help make sure people become aware. Because of this I did a little research, although it became difficult at times, and collect statistics I feel people need to know. • 46 to 52% of adults and teenagers do not know that shaking a baby could be ...

Elementary class size reduction is a big deal

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, This letter is in response to a letter by Del Pedroni, printed in the Manteca Bulletin on April 25, 2009. The letter addresses concerns that Del Pedroni has with negotiations between the Manteca Unified School District and teachers. I respect the concerns he has with regards to the loss of classes, staffing and services at the high school level. Where I take exception is in the line from his letter, and I ...

Teachers are pawns in negotiating games

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, Negotiations for the teaching staff of Manteca Unified School District have not gone well. It would seem that it is more of a grudge match than negotiations. Way back in the beginning of all of this the Manteca Educators Association's voting body was not totally opposed to a temporary 5% pay reduction along with acceptance of budget modifications submitted by the various budget committees. However, the response of the board was to ...

Board decides Tuesday whether to jettison class-size reduction

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, The reason I am writing this letter to the newspaper is because I am not sure if parents are aware of a drastic change concerning their children's educational future. The school board is voting this Tuesday, April 28, on whether to eliminate class size reduction in grades K-3. It took years for this positive step in education to be realized in California, and the gains we have made since its implementation are ...

Baby shakers deserve life sentence

Editor, Manteca Bulletin; Reading in your paper Wednesday, I read the article about the Shaken Baby that died yesterday. Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), is far more common than people realize. Some recent studies have led researchers to believe that a percentage of SIDS deaths are caused by a parent shaking the baby and then leaving them in their crib where they die from the shaking. Shaking a baby is a violent act, causing the baby's ...

Board needs to revisit Level 3 cuts

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, Many questions have come up as the district negotiations continue that should be addressed. First of all, how can a blanket proposal of not allowing a class of less than 30 enrolled students to be taught even be considered? I am not sure if the ramifications of what that does to high school courses are fully understood. A proposal like this would immediately throw advanced placement/honors courses into jeopardy. The very nature ...

Are only a handful of parents concerned about school bus cuts?

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, I attended the Manteca Unified School District bus informational meeting at Manteca High on April 21. I appreciated the professional and courteous way Jason Osborn, the transportation director, conducted the meeting and his informative presentation. Unfortunately, only a handful of parents took advantage of this opportunity to get the facts and let their concerns be heard. According to the district's handout, 691 high school students, throughout the district, will no longer be ...

To the thug who stole his U.S. flag

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, Webster's Dictionary describes a person that purloins as one who steals. Webster's also describes a thug as a hoodlum or ruffian. The thug or thugs that stole my American flag I hope will fly it with as much honor and pride that I did. You thug or thugs (I have many more descriptive words for you I can't use in this letter) are free to your endeavors and behavior as thugs due ...

Open landscape work to competitive bids

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, Mayor Willie Weatherford's proposal and your support for opening landscape district work to competition is probably the most effective way to help ensure taxpayers and homeowners get good value for tax and fee dollars. Without competition, ongoing large cost increases could make cost and fee disclosure misleading to home buyers. If Manteca's internal studies show city estimates, costs, or both are within 5 percent of fixed-price bids to do the work, the ...
