Worries about safety of people on electric scooters

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, I am writing to encourage the paper to write an article on safety for the summer. This comes from a concern. Recently I was driving down Locust Avenue and found a person in an electric powered assistance chair going down the middle of the street! There was no bright orange flag on the chair to bring attention to the traffic that they were there. My concern is that there are many individuals ...

Use dog license surcharge better animal shelter instead

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, The Manteca City Council is considering raising dog license on the population, to make us pay for maintenance on a dog park that the majority of dog owners won't even use. They propose spending a huge chunk of park money to erect this park. It wasn't too long ago that the council was soliciting neighborhood volunteers to erect play equipment for the parks, to save $30,000 to the city. The volunteers simply ...

Credit changes hurt country

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, How sad that hard working American people cannot count on their elected representatives to protect them from unfair business practices. Two years ago, based on my debt to income ratio and ignoring my stellar payment history, four of my credit cards with the highest balances raised my interest rates to the maximum 24% to 30% causing my monthly minimum payments to jump up to $350. They became completely unmanageable causing me to ...

Shopping in Ripon instead of Manteca

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, The latest election showed that people are tired of paying taxes and footing the bill for our government officials who can't balance a budget. I live in the border of Ripon and Manteca and I can easily buy my gas and food in either city as they are about the same distance from my home. Manteca is the highest city in San Joaquin County for sales tax. There is no incentive for ...

The coming collapse of Social Security

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, The trustees of the Social Security program said on May 12, 2009, that Social Security will begin paying more in benefits than it is receiving in 2016 and Social Security will be completely depleted by 2037, hurting our elderly that would depend on the money for their retirement. The Republican party has attempted bold moves to save Social Security from going bankrupt while the Democrats turn a blind eye to the problem, ...

The same old tune is wearing way too thin

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, Twice in a row now, we have been subjected to words of wisdom from the apparently severely inebriated without a rebuttal. Not that one hasn't been submitted, I assure you. The most recent being Saturday's letter ("Going 'green' will cause great economic harm to US") by Scott McComas. In his latest indiscernible tune from his one-string banjo, you know, the one that sounds like "Republicans good, Democrats bad", he claims: 1. Democrats ...

Going ‘green’ will cause great economic harm to US

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, The doom and gloom predictions are out in force again. Remember when the predictions were for $300 per barrel of oil was all the rage? Now we have the predictions for over 10% unemployment which will last until after 2010. Housing prices are predicted to fall some more. The Obama White House is predicting a slow recovery that will change very little until after 2011. Whenever a Republican writer expresses their ...

I wouldn’t trade my gay daughter for a straight daughter

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, I want to thank you on the column that you wrote in reference to the young man who "admitted" he was gay. I did notice what the article had stated. I was upset as it sounded like it was a bad thing to be gay. The writer of that article sounds like they have issues with gays. I have a 20-year-old daughter who is gay. I have watched my daughter grow up ...

Dia De Los Ninos event was success

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, The Manteca Branch Library hosted a Dia De Los Ninos celebration on May 2, 2009. Despite rainy weather it was a wonderful time for everyone involved. A grant from Target stores funded many aspects of the event including free books for every child who attended. Entertainment included a special Storytime and Ballet Folklorico Autlense under the direction of Dorio Del Rio courtesy of the P.L.A.Y. Multicultural Arts Network In addition many groups ...

Break the cycle vote ‘no’ on all propositions

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, One of the classic definitions of insanity is repeating the same action or process and expecting a different result. Following this premise, our continual practice of electing career politicians becomes, by definition, an act of insanity. At what point do we finally wake up and say "enough is enough"? Anyone paying attention surely has noticed that the major political parties have only one overriding interest in mind – the furtherance of their ...

Commends police chief, officers for cutting crime & expenditures

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, I personally commend the police department for its efforts in reducing crime in Manteca. Chief Dave Bricker and his staff of officers have streamlined the department for maximum efficiency with less personnel. By doing so, Chief Bricker saved the city a bundle of money. This man doesn't care about recognition, for he does it to save the people of Manteca tax money. He is working with an understaffed department and still manages ...

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Karl Wolford, Dr. Robert Leny for their endless time and care for Richard for the past 16 months. Finds service, prices better in Manteca

Editor, Manteca Bulletin, Who hasn't heard "shop local and support local business?" But we have been taught that shopping the internet, big box stores or in larger cities is the best way to save money. So shopping local and supporting our small business seems a little like "pay more for the good of the community." Right? WRONG!! I had an opportunity this winter to test this important two-sided debate. I purchased two old buildings on ...

Guards not source of smuggled cell phones

Editor, Manteca I am a correctional officer (you calls us guards) working in one of the institutions in the State of California. I have sworn an oath to uphold the law and to protect the citizenry. I find your comments about "cell phones in prison" to be both misinformed and naive. You state that "prison guards" can easily pocket an extra "100 to 400 dollars" from the selling of the phones. That part is ...
