School board’s calendar hurts teaching

At the last Manteca Unified school board meeting, the trustees approved a calendar which defies description. But, I will try to explain what has happened. District administration brought a calendar to the school board for their approval. A great deal of thought, time and effort was spent in developing a calendar that provided an excellent framework for learning during these tough financial times.

RDA: A community development tool that’s here to stay

I was out for a walk about 15 years ago with my first Dalmatian named Zebra when an elderly neighbor – she actually lived two blocks away – beckoned me from her porch.

Margo Young grows up along with Manteca

Imagine Manteca so small that everyone knows everybody. So small that the area where St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and the houses along that stretch of East North Street is just open fields. And small enough there are only about 5,000 people who call this Spreckels Sugar town home.

Coming home to a place I had never been before

I had bonked the previous day on Sonora Pass on a 90-degree day. It was the sixth day of a fully loaded touring bicycling trip with two teen boys. I was carrying 80 pounds of gear and supplies on my touring bicycle. They were on racing bicycles with just handlebar bags. The object was to crisscross seven major Sierra passes in seven days. The previous day we had crested Tioga Pass and were headed to Topaz Lake via Sonora Pass before tackling Monitor Pass and heading home to Lincoln.
