Annual Manteca Unified Spelling Bee tonight (Nov. 7) at Manteca High

The annual District Spelling Bee will be held tonight (Nov. 7) in the Theater Building at Manteca High. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. The winners at each school site for their division will represent their school at the District Spelling Bee. The top three spellers in the 4th to 6th division will be registered for the San Joaquin County Spelling Bee. Those winners will represent Manteca Unified. Manteca Unified School Farm hosts fall AgVenture

The Manteca Unified School Farm will again play host to 4,000 third graders from Tracy, Ripon, Escalon, and Manteca when the fall AgVenture field trip will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The students from the four school districts will be touring the school farm to learn food gets to their dining table from the farm. The experience also allows them to gain understanding and knowledge of the food grown in their own back yard.

MEA teachers, students donate to Lodi Support Our Troops

Three trucks full of donations from Manteca Unified School teachers and students, plus a $500 cash donation were delivered to the Lodi Support Our Troops this week. More than 2,000 hand-written student letters addressed to the American soldiers also accompanied the donated items which will be mailed in care packages to American soldiers serving overseas in time for the holidays. This is a project of the Manteca Educators Association started by president Ken Johnson six years ago.

Battle of the bands fund-raiser at Mossdale School in Lathrop

Nearly a dozen bands, including the Mossdale Elementary School band in Lathrop, will be performing on stage from 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, in the multipurpose room. It's all for a philanthropic cause. All proceeds will go to a trust to help the family of school custodian Ronnie LeMay who was diagnosed with brain cancer three years ago. The husband, his wife and their four children live in Manteca. He continued to work until September when he was placed on long-term disability. Calla High collecting donations for soldiers

Calla High School staff and students are adopting American service men and women this Christmas. They are asking the public to help them collect items that will be mailed in time for the holidays. Donations must be dropped off at Calla High, corner E. Highway 120 and Austin Road, by Wednesday, Nov. 6. The project is in cooperation with the Cpl. Charles O. MJC new Student Saturdays

MODESTO – Modesto Junior College will host two "New Student Saturdays" this spring to enroll high school seniors. The events will be held on March 8 and April 12 with sessions beginning at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. in the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus. No pre-registration is required, and attendance and campus parking are free.
