Kong holds off points leader Reichmuth in Basically-4s

With only two dates remaining on the 2012 schedule for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Weekly Racing Series at the Stockton 99 Speedway, the action in last Saturday's program took on an added intensity. Not only were weekly bragging rights on the line, but teams in five divisions were battling for both the Tri-Holiday Classic Series and 2012 season championships.

Midnight fishing offers different angling perspective

I always figured that writing an outdoor column had to be extremely easy. How hard can it be? You go fishing and then lie about it. Isn't that what all fishermen do anyway? Wrong. A couple nights ago, I kept wracking my brain, trying to get sufficiently inspired to write something worthy of you folks. Nothing seemed to work, not even wearing my fishing hat. Suddenly I had a brilliant idea! Instead of worrying about it, I'd go out in the fresh air and clear the cobwebs out of my mind by doing a little fishing.

Replacement refs: NFL deserves penalty for arrogance

Sometimes you put a foot down wrong and don't find out for a week or two that you actually dislocated a hip. That's how it's going to be if the NFL sticks with its plan to start the regular season with replacement referees - from mild annoyance to major pain to humongous regret. And all because the people in charge are too used to getting their way.

Take a legislator fishing with you

As you may be aware, I have more than a passing interest in politics. Now you may be asking yourself "What's that have to do with fishing, hunting and other outdoor pursuits?" The answer is "Almost everything." Whether you want to legalize mountain lion hunting because there are too many lions and attacks on women and children are becoming common, or if you want more trout planted in your favorite stream, the answers you get are part of a political process.

Encounters with critters

In the last few weeks, I have read news articles about a possible mountain lion sighting in the community of Mountain House, west of Tracy, about a moose whose antlers were caught in a backyard swing set in northern Utah, and about a Boy Scout leader who was attacked by a rabid beaver while swimming in New York State.
