We weren't in much of a hurry Saturday, so we stood at the tailgate of Nate's truck and retold the highlights of seven years worth of fly fishing trips. Whenever we've been together lately it's been like this. Our memories are told with increased vigor and embellishment as my move nears.
I continue to be amazed at how far technology has advanced and its impact on fishing.
Outside of fishing trips, I get column ideas from everywhere.
Not long ago I heard a story about a school teacher in Montana who asked students on a quiz to name the four seasons. The most common answer she got was Trout Season, Deer Season, Elk Season, and Duck Season. That's sort of the way my mind works too. Opening Day of both deer season and bear season for the Sierra Nevada Mountains is Saturday, Sept. 28. Deer season runs six weeks until Nov. 3, while bear season lasts until Dec. 29.
Fishing and football have been two of my deepest passions since I was a youngster.
We knew Sierra's Bryson Sanders would be one of quarterback Jake Pruitt's favorite targets.
Last week I discussed Into the Wild with my buddy Nate's junior Advanced Placement class during my prep period.
With the summer-like conditions we've been having lately, the inexperienced angler tends to believe that the fishing conditions are the same as the summer. After all, the days are just as hot and the waterways are as busy as any other summer day.
When I was chastised for wearing a Simms Fishing Products hat while deer hunting this summer, my hunting buddy, who will remain nameless, didn't mention the trout silhouette on the front.
Labor Day weekend is an exciting time for most anglers.
Dad would have turned 63 on Saturday.
I watched the evening news the other day and saw where a group of local motorcycle enthusiasts were having a Sunday ride to raise money for charity. Despite the bad press that motorcyclists occasionally suffer from, I have found them to generally be a compassionate, caring group of people. My brother, Chris, rode a Harley until his death and it seemed that his motorcycle club was always raising money for kids or veterans. The motorcycle folks are all right. The beautiful people are back, and actor Danny DeVito dropped by the other night, too. Dodger Stadium was always a place to be seen, but now they come because there really is something to see:
If you've never shot black powder guns before you ought to give it a try. It transports you back in time as you pour the powder down the barrel, drop the lead ball or shot in and tamp it down with a ramrod You had to let the smoke cloud blow away before you could see if you hit your target!
Using his front row starting position to maximum advantage, Upper Lake's Jeremy Doss was able to snatch the early lead in Saturday's Spears Manufacturing SRL Southwest Tour Sunnyvalley Smoked Meats 125 at the Stockton 99 Speedway where he spent the rest of the race fending off multiple challengers to earn the checkered flag.
Life jackets are one of the most valuable pieces of equipment on a boat, but lot of owners spend huge amounts of money on radio systems, wakeboard towers, downriggers, power poles, and other luxury items.
Last week while driving to a favorite camping spot of mine, I got behind a boat that was being towed by a small SUV. It wouldn't have been too bad if the boat was small but it was a lot bigger than the SUV, which is very dangerous.
While most of us enjoyed the Fourth of July weekend with parades, fireworks and backyard barbeques, Chicago endured an amazing 51 shootings. At last count, America's third largest metropolitan area had a total of 12 deaths that resulted from the shootings. More are still in critical condition. Gee wouldn't it be great if Chicago could only outlaw guns so that such shootings wouldn't happen?
