WESTON RANCH – There's hot, and then there's Eddie Andrade hot. Down double digits to intra-district rival Weston Ranch Friday night in Stockton, Sierra High's Andrade erupted in the third quarter with five 3-point shots that not only swung the momentum squarely back into Sierra's favor, but also helped cut the Cougar lead down to a single point. In the end, however, it was the speed of Weston Ranch that would deal the final blow ...
I obviously wasn't the only person excited about Friday night's marquee matchup between the Sierra and Weston Ranch boys basketball teams.
The first fishing advice I ever received was to be patient. I'm not sure if I even understood the word back then, I just knew that I was expected to wait for the fish to come to me. This time of year, I'm constantly reminded of that advice, as the bites are usually harder to come by. There are a couple of things that I do to keep motivated when the fishing gets tough. I ...
When I was 8, I put a filet of salmon in the microwave. My bewildered parents frantically removed the fish and opened the kitchen windows. Thus began my adventure in cooking, more precisely articulated using scientific jargon than culinary. In college I experimented with pasta sauce made from Italian dressing, ketchup and assorted spices I took from the student union. It was every bit as awful as one might imagine - ingredients angrily revolting against ...
Last weekend I was as shocked as almost everyone else in the nation to learn of the shootings of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and 19 other people in Tucson, Arizona.
When up to your pelvis in a river, and the insert in your waders is bunched at the toe, its annoying. Not debilitating but something you will surely address next time you are on shore.
Now that Christmas is over I'm sure many of you have new fishing equipment that you're dying to try out.
I think I am over the New Years Eve thing. Not that I want 2010 to be a Ground Hog year or that I don't look forward to pinning back another month on the Alaska calendar mom gives me for Christmas, but the spectacle of the thing - the excuse for debauchery before an attempt to recall it all in the form of a resolution that lasts 17 days - is old. I've been to ...
The California Department of Fish and Game has released the results of their annual Fall Midwater Trawl of pelagic (open-water) species in the Delta.
Purely by coincidence, life-clarity has coincided with calendar change. I've always hated New Year's resolutions on the premise that it doesn't take fireworks and funny number glasses to reveal deficiencies. I should be just as aware of my idiocy on April 18 as I am on December 31. Even after cleaning up areas of our lives, there is always work to be done, because life is dynamic, even if we remain static. I can't treat ...
While updating my phone it crashed, and I lost all of my information. Initially, I didn't think it was such a big deal. I couldn't have been more wrong, as I ended up spending most of day trying to recover all of my lost information. It's really quite scary at how much information can be lost in a matter of seconds. On my boat I have a depth finder that has close to 10 years ...
My fishing buddy from this summer, Steve the cook, is up before the sun. That's not saying too much because the sun rises at 8:18 in Klawock, Alaska (it sets at 3:20). It's supposed to snow today until the temperature hits the high of 36, then it will melt into sleet, turning the ground snow into slush. When the sun sets it will freeze, locking tire treads and footprints into position until sunrise. Driving is ...
The other day, my son, Bo, and I went out to sight in a new rifle scope. The old one had begun to malfunction and needed to be replaced. Fortunately, almost all reputable optic manufacturers stand behind their products. In this case, the scope happened to be made by Bushnell Optics. A quick visit to the Bushnell website confirmed that you simply return the defective product, with an explanation of what went wrong, include a ...
The effect on water temperature and fish behavior is directly related. Where I grew up, there were a couple of ponds in my neighborhood that were run-off ponds for an electric company. The water used to cool off the generators and then pumped back into the ponds. Consequently, those ponds stayed close to 80 degrees all year long. Somehow, bass were introduced into the pond and catching them became very easy after a few years. ...
Click. Click. Click. "Welcome to Bass Pro … hello … hello … hi … good afternoon … Happy Holidays … Welcome to Bass Pro." Click, click, click, click. There has to be a clause in the Bass Pro Shops contract that no one will claim seasonal disability on account of things like standing under the faux Redwood and pressing a clicker every time someone enters the store. The line is not quite as bad as ...
When working out an itinerary for mom's retirement trip to Fairbanks and surrounding areas, I had to fit in a float on the Chena River for Arctic grayling. Naturally, a very late ice break up and torrential rains had the Chena swollen to the point the guide called to say the float was in serious jeopardy. I had never fished the area I had no clue what I'd do if the float didn't happen. If the Chena was blown out, then everything else might be unfishable too.
Five years ago I purchased a 75-gallon fish tank from someone selling it on Craigslist.
Editor's note: Only a portion of Lund's column ran in Wednesday's Bulletin. Here it is in its entirety.
In January, the outdoor itinerary for summer is so ambitious - a schedule of old haunts with dreams of adventures in new spots. But when fall comes, what you didn't get to sometimes outnumbers what you did.
The weather has been uncharacteristic for the month of May - lots of wind and cooler temperatures for this time of year.
I know it's summer and I should sleep in, but when you're solar-powered and the sun floods into your room your body doesn't care if it's 4:18.
There are many ways to catch a fish. Yesterday while doing some grocery shopping I ran into my high school physical education teacher, coach Gebhart. He reminded me of a way of catching fish that I've never really gotten into. Coach Gebhart likes to fly fish just as much as he likes to golf. I have a fly rod, which is 27 years old and has sat collecting dust for the past 20 years. I ...
