The joy of cheap dreams

If I can't be on the Thorne River, I'd take the Upper Sacramento, McCloud or Pit. If I can't be on any of those, or outdoors period, the next best place is to be at the annual Sportsman's Expo in Sacramento.

Cures for cabin fever January 2013

Some folks think that there is no such thing as Cabin Fever. They are dead wrong. If Alferd Packer was still around, they could ask him about it. Good old Alferd (that's really how he spelled his name) was the noted cannibal who ate several of his companions after being trapped with them while snowbound in Colorado in 1874.

The world’s best fly

It’s not really about the fishing, is it?

Facebook tried to tell me what my 20 biggest moments were in the past year, but it was close only when I considered the list was drafted by a program made by people who don't know me. Technology thinks my year can be reduced to pictures and subsequent "like" clicks from "friends". Impossible.

He had probably washed the dishes, made the bed and been exceedingly polite. Not solely because of the question/statement he'd later ask, but maybe.

Handicapped and the outdoors

Like a lot of subjects, my views regarding being handicapped and participating in outdoor activities have evolved over the years. Probably the single biggest factor in my awakening to the opportunities in the outdoors for those with handicaps was when I met Arvel Gipson. Old Arv had fallen off a high transmission line and broken his back, which left him using crutches for the rest of his life. The odd thing was, Arvel refused to let his handicap stop his enjoyment of the outdoors.

‘Keep things simple’ in tackle box

I've learned over the years that a person could drive themselves crazy worrying about every little detail when it came to fishing.
