Column: The Big 3 deserve a big no in Hall vote

It could have been the greatest Hall of Fame class since Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb were installed in the very first vote back in 1936.

Trying to control the chaos

My brother has always strictly adhered to a linear approach to life. Things will happen in a specific, organized, planned way. Naturally, he has failed miserably.

From writer’s block to Thanksgiving thoughts

When I first got the opportunity to write an outdoor column on a regular basis, I had two immediate thoughts: first, how lucky I was to be able to get paid to write about fishing and have it become tax deductible; and secondly how easy it would be to simply go out each week and then put something down on paper.

Expect the unexpected

I can't remember how many times over the past year that I've emphasized being prepared for the unexpected while out fishing. The unexpected happened to me a few years ago while out on the delta. Fishing out of a relative's fairly new boat we were surprised to hear the dreaded "click, click" sound when attempting to start his boat at the end of the day. His batteries had died and we were officially stranded! ...

The typical thankful column

I've been inundated with reasons to be happy of late. Some are simple, some carry more emotional weight.

NFL safety not just current issue

Roger Goodell's timing seemed odd, with his Harvard School of Public Health speech on player safety coming after a week in which three starting NFL quarterbacks were knocked out of games with concussions.

Go with whatever floats your boat

Often I overhear fishermen talking about the perfect boat; of course the brand of their boat is the best!

The (Vanilla) Ice-ing on the wedding cake

Saturday, my buddy Nate got married. It was awesome. The individually-written vows were heartfelt and honest, the guests were happy and supportive, the food was great and we were able to see Alabama lose to Texas A&M between the pictures and the ceremony. When you watch movies about weddings, they are either portrayed as successes with riotously jovial guests, or dismal failures with chairs filled with pessimists. I have not been ...

Pheasants for working stiffs

A century ago, almost all of our population was involved in agriculture. As a people, we grew up on the family farm, and were familiar with growing plants and animals for our livelihood. As we became a more urbanized society, most of our population moved to the cities and found work in factories and stores and office buildings. Our national consciousness began to change and we began to lose our connections to the rhythmic flow of nature.

Something smells fishy? Attractants may do trick

Fish attractants have been used in some form or another for many years. I can remember there being a big interest in fish attractants in the mid-1980s, as several major tackle manufacturers added fish attractants to their product line.

Will miss conversations with national surveyors

As an outdoors columnist I know I'm supposed to hate the election season along with all the other knuckle-dragging Neanderthals that believe as John Gierach does:

Elm Street's got nothing on wintertime Gustavus

In recent weeks movie channels have been showing the best of the best in the horror film genre, but TV doesn't do it for me. I've been to the Twilight Zone - it's Gustavus, Alaska, in winter.

Life goes on, thankfully

After your mom has the 7-millimeter aneurysm in her right middle cranial artery fixed, you've watched a You Tube clip of the same procedure on a different brain and your mom starts telling people she'll be home in a week (the doctors smile and say it will probably be a few days longer), your depth of observation increases.
