Handicapped and the outdoors

Like a lot of subjects, my views regarding being handicapped and participating in outdoor activities have evolved over the years. Probably the single biggest factor in my awakening to the opportunities in the outdoors for those with handicaps was when I met Arvel Gipson. Being bad can be a good thing

I don't remember my first-ever fishing trip, but I do recall the early days of fly-fishing in which hitting the water while standing in it was difficult for me.

Give a Big Mack for Christmas

I'd like to share with you a gift idea for someone that you hold very dear. It's best suited for kids, but it also it suitable for spouses, best friends, or anyone you really care for. I began to fish when I was quite young. In fact I was so young that I don't remember when I caught my first fish, nor when I got my first fishing rod. But I do remember Big Mack.

From writer’s block to Thanksgiving thoughts

When I first got the opportunity to write an outdoor column on a regular basis, I had two immediate thoughts: first, how lucky I was to be able to get paid to write about fishing and have it become tax deductible; and secondly how easy it would be to simply go out each week and then put something down on paper.

Expect the unexpected

I can't remember how many times over the past year that I've emphasized being prepared for the unexpected while out fishing. The unexpected happened to me a few years ago while out on the delta. Fishing out of a relative's fairly new boat we were surprised to hear the dreaded "click, click" sound when attempting to start his boat at the end of the day. His batteries had died and we were officially stranded! This being a new boat as well as a new boat operator, his only useful device on board was his cell phone. As ...
