1996: Five wrestlers head to section tourney

Ninety years ago, on February 13, 1926, the Modesto High team displayed accuracy in varied passing and shooting and defeated the Manteca High team this evening in the local gym. The final score was 31 to 20. Undampened in spirits, the Manteca boys played a hard game and some good passing and goals were made. Fay Forsell made an excellent and successful shot for goal from the center of the field. Emil Theiler, being an efficient and fast player, played on the varsity.

1996: Sierra soccer perfect in VOL play

Eighty years ago, on February 8, 1936, Manteca High's Buffaloes showed their quality when they twisted their way to a 40-14 victory over the favored Orestimba High quintet of Newman to take first place in the league with four wins and one defeat. The Buffaloes were led by Milo Candini's passing and the shooting of Harold Reynolds and Bev Brownell. Brownell had 12 points to lead Manteca.

Forty years ago, on February 2, 1976, a titanic defensive struggle erupted into a quick scoring spree and Manteca High retained the coveted Bob Baldwin Cup with a hard-fought 2-0 win over East Union High at Guss Schmiedt Field. 1976: Buffs beat EU before 1,200 fans

Sixty years ago, on January 27, 1956 – a three-senior, two-junior combination for Manteca High hit the round hoop for 20 field goals and 16 free throws to defeat favored Tracy High 56-43 in the local gym. Sparked by the whole team, the Buffaloes grabbed their first league win in five starts. Coach Joe Jacobs called on a new quintet of cagers and they answered the call with a much-needed win. 1996: 7 pins give Sierra 1st ever wrestling victory

Eighty years ago, on January 17, 1936, the Manteca High Buffaloes defeated Patterson High 47 to 21 in the fastest game of the season in the second league tilt to be held on the local floor. The Buffaloes, led by Harold Reynolds, Ed Grant and Bev Brownell, who made 20, 14 and 10 points, respectively, were on the long end of the score from the start. 1996: Bryan Lucas scores 45 points in Buff cage win

Forty years ago, on January 12, 1976, sparked by a pair of 1975 graduates, Dana Taylor and Chris Elliott, the East Union High alumni overcame a 14-point deficit in the final three minute s to edge the EU varsity cagers 63-62 at Dalben Center. The two former Lancer guards combined efforts to score 14 of the 19 fourth-quarter point s for the alumni. 1986: Sabala’s pin assures Buffalo wrestling victory

Fifty years ago, on January 8, 1966, Manteca High continued its winning ways by downing a scrappy Oakdale High quintet 73-66. Oakdale led the Buffaloes by 14-13 at the first quarter, but trailed from that point on. The Buffs were never able to put the game away, though. Once again, Coach Joe Handy's Buffs had four scorers in double figures. Jim Anderson, Mel Montanio and John Tubbs all had 16 points. Close behind was Vance Munoz with 15 points.

1975: Delmanowski leads Manteca to tourney title

Forty years ago, on December 30, 1975, leading from the opening basket, Manteca High raced to an easy 75-52 victory over Ripon Christian High, and with it, the championship of the sixth annual Linden Holiday Basketball Tournament. The Buffaloes became the first school to win the tourney a second time. The local school won the very first event in Linden, back in 1970. 1985: Manteca’s Ted Nuce is world champion bull rider

Fifty years ago, on December 1, 1965, Manteca High tackle Don Widmer was named first–team tackle on the San Francisco Chronicle's All-Northern California prep football team. The Nor-Cal team is selected by 200 coaches from Fresno to the Oregon border. Widmer was the only member of the Valley Oak League to make the Nor-Cal first team.

1965: Newton’s 20 points send Buffs past St. Mary’s

Eighty years ago, on December 7, 1935, the Manteca High Buffaloes repeated their basketball victory of last year over St. Mary's High by claiming the large end of a 29-15 score on the Stockton High floor. The Buffs had an easy 13-0 lead at half time, but the local reserves were put in for the second half and St. Mary's scored easily. Milo Candini led MHS with nine points.

2005: Spinks tanks 14 Of 16 free throws in Lancers hoops win

10 years ago: December 1, 2005 – In its first match of the season, the Sierra High wrestling team faced St.Mary's High. The Timberwolves came out victorious by a score of 33-29. Many of the SHS wins were by forfeit, but Donnie Berg took a decision in the 152 weight class.

1995: Hensley leads EU volleyball sweep

Twenty years ago, on October 6, 1995, Manteca High halfback Jesse Meneses rushed for 162 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Buffaloes downed Los Banos High 35-18 in Valley Oak League football action. The 5-10, 195-pound senior scored on runs of 2, 5, 6 and 73 yards. Mike Placencia ran in from a yard out for the final TD. Tony Gonzalez kicked five extra points. Coach Joe Miller's Buffs are now 4-1 on the season.

2005: Buffs open with 40-0 blowout OF Ceres

100 years ago, on September 7, 1915, Clements-Lockeford, with Pete Sheppard in the box, made a very poor showing when they faced the Manteca Merchants. Elmer Blodgett seemed none the worse of his mid-week accident and pitched a good game, backed by strong support. Manteca got an early start, getting four runs in the first and the final score was 11 to 4.

2005: EU’s Arevalo fans 15 batters in shutout victory

10 years ago: March 24, 2005 – Sierra High's first-ever football coach will become its second-ever athletic director, effective next year. Greg Leland, who served as the face of the Timberwolves' football program during its first 11 seasons and its only varsity football coach, will take over the reins from Vern Gebhardt. Gebhardt announced his retirement to Sierra High Principal Rick Arucan last year.

1935: MHS star Barber to play pro football

Eighty years ago, on February 14, 1935, Jim Barber of Manteca, one of the country's outstanding football stars, signed a contract with the Boston Braves, professional eleven, for the coming season. He expects to join the team in August, but before doing so is expected to play one game with the Chicago Tribune team. The Manteca boy was captain of the University of San Francisco eleven during the past season and was mentioned in numerous mythical All-American teams.
