1937: Local boxer Tillie Delnero wins two bouts

One hundred years ago, on June 5, 1917, Gilman invaded Manteca. Gilman is a small town about six miles south of Modesto on the Crows Landing Road. They brought about 13 ball players and beat Manteca, 14 to 4. The game had one sensational feature in the sixth inning when Elmer Blodgett, playing center, went through the barbed wire fence which restricts the outfield. He made a flying catch and, Trojan-like, hit strands of wire with a bang. He was found lying on the other side, safe with the ball. His escape from injury was little short of miraculous.

2007: EU’s Arevalo fans 25 in doubleheader victories

Sixty years ago, on May 16, 1957, Paul Wiggin, All-American tackle at Stanford, signed his contract with the Cleveland Browns, professional football team, and will report to the training camp near Cleveland on July 24. Wiggin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Wiggin Sr. of Lathrop and has had an outstanding football career, beginning with Manteca High, Modesto Junior College and the past three years on the Stanford varsity.

2007: Yrigoyen’s two-run homer sparks Sierra ein

10 years ago: May 9, 2007 – Visiting East Union High scored all of its runs on back-to-back RBI singles from Courtney Perry and Brionna Goulart in the second inning to lead the Lancers to a 2-0 victory over Weston Ranch High in VOL softball action Tuesday. EU pitcher Erin Arevalo was her usual dominating self, striking out 15 in a one-hitter.

1977: Eleven Oakdale errors lead to Lancer baseball win

Ninety years ago, on April 26, 1927, the Manteca High baseball team easily defeated the Turlock High nine on the latter's grounds by a score of 8 to 4. Emil Theiler and Sid Ettinger have been ineligible for the last two games because they took part in a Don Pedro League game.

1997: Hardcastle named Section scholar-athlete

Ninety years ago, on April 9, 1927, the Manteca High nine shut out the Jackson High team in a game played here, the score being 7 to 0. Burton Bauer, Manteca's little freshman chucker, went the entire route for Coach Ben Mellow's squad and he received fine support from the other players. Joe Bianchi hit a triple and a double, Ed Forsell got three hits and Emil Theiler and Sid Ettinger each got two hits.

1997: Hardcastle’s 3-run homer leads Lancer win

Ninety years ago, on March 29, 1927, the Manteca High baseball team soundly defeated the Brentwood High team on the local field with a score of 8 to 0. It was only a seven-inning practice game. The Brentwood team seemed very nervous and the Green and White team took a three-run lead in the opening frame and had no trouble in keeping the Brentwood tossers from home plate. 1997: Lewallen fans 12 in Lancer softball win

Fifty years ago, on March 22, 1967, Manteca High hurler Phil Brown gave up only two hits last night but still lost to Tracy High 1-0 at the Gallagher Tournament in Stockton. A well-placed squeeze bunt forced across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Tracy.

1977: EU’s Poindexter fans 10 in 5-inning game

Thirty years ago, on March 15, 1987, Scott Brooks was named the Most Valuable Player at the University of California-Irvine's basketball awards banquet. The Lathrop native and former East Union High player had earlier been named to the first team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association. Brooks led the Anteaters in scoring at 23.8 points per game, the highest on the West Coast this season.

1977: MHS’ Steves is All-VOL hoop pick

Thirty years ago, on March 6, 1987, junior guard Marshall Cannon pumped in a game-high 17 points to help lead Manteca High to their first-ever Sac-Joaquin Section boys' basketball championship, knocking off Livingston High 43-38 in the Division II tourney at Arco Arena in Sacramento. Cannon was also named the tourney's Most Valuable Player and joined teammates Chad Johnson and John Gibson on the all-tournament team. Kevin Wentworth added 12 points to the winning effort.

1987: MHS’s Mike Henry named VOL coach of year

Thirty years ago, on March 5, 1987, three Manteca High players have been selected for the North squad in the 1987 Lions Central California All-s tar Football Classic. Rob Van De Pol and Ed Silva, a pair of linemen headed to Utah State on scholarship, and Jerry Camara were chosen. MHS coach Bob Lee has already been selected as a coach for the team.

1967: Tracy beats Buffs 109-51 in VOL hoops

Fifty years ago, on February 24, 1967, Tracy High scored more than 100 points Tuesday night and Manteca High is not too happy about it. The league-leading Bulldogs boosted their league mark to 8-3 with the 109-51 win over the hapless Buffaloes, who dropped their seventh Valley Oak League game. John Newton and Dave Leonardo topped Manteca's scoring with 12 points apiece.

1977: EU upsets Sonora in basketball

Forty years ago, on February 15, 1977, East Union High pulled the upset of the Valley Oak League basketball campaign, stunning Sonora High at the Wildcats' gym 82-78. Russell Stewart, a 6-2 senior who will complete his first and only year of high school basketball, kept the scoreboard lights blinking with an amazing 39 points. The total is a Lancer individual scoring record and is also an individual high this season in league play. Tim Tucker added 18 to the winning total, while Kelly DeGeest had 12 and Bruce Corbett 10 counters.

Forty years ago, on January 24, 1977, successfully picking up the pace in the third period with a combination of better shooting, improved rebounding and more intense pressure with its press, Manteca High rode unimpeded in the second half en route to a 75-51 win over cross-town East Union High. 1947: Curtis Patterson leads Manteca High basketball win

Ninety years ago, on January 15, 1927, in the most exciting game ever played at the Eye Street Auditorium at Modesto High, the Manteca High basketball team defeated Modesto High. The score was 18 to 14. This makes five straight victories for Manteca and the second straight CIF win. Eddie Forsell scored six points for Manteca.
