Mariano Valenzuela was the leading Buff point-getter with firsts in the high hurdles and the broad jump and a second in the low hurdles. Forty years ago, on April 5, 1972, officials of the prestigious Los Angeles High School Shrine football game have announced that Vic Liles of Manteca High has been selected as one of only three valley football players to participate in the annual summer contest. 20 years ago: May 11, 1991 - Manteca High's Paul Gutierrez hurled a three-hitter to lead the Buffs to a 3-1 VOL baseball win over East Union High Friday afternoon at MHS. Gutierrez had done the same thing in the first meeting between the two city teams. The junior left-hander walked five and struck out eight. Junior Dain Cilley led the Buffs' attack, going three-for-four at the plate, scoring once and driving in a run.
Sixty years ago, on May 4, 1951, Win Converse was selected as "Baseball Fan of 1951" by members of the Manteca High baseball team at a party. Mr. Converse has been attending ball games since the first teams were organized in the early days of the city. He was presented an autographed baseball by Coach Arte Fairbanks and members of the team. Bob Turk and Pete Arizcuren were presented a new baseball and bat as top hitters of the team by Coach Fairbanks.
