1924: poor Modesto lighting, slick floor doom Buff cagers

Ninety years ago, on February 1, 1924, in the roughest game of basketball seen this year, Manteca High lost to Modesto High by a 25 to 15 score in the Modesto gymnasium. "Dutch" Washington, as usual, was high point man for Manteca, making eight markers. Dutch made a hard fight but poor lighting in the Modesto gymnasium affected his eye because all his shots were hitting the ring, and he was actually robbed several times. Otherwise, the Manteca quintet would have brought home the bacon.

1984: Lancers’ slow-down offense results in EU loss

Thirty years ago, on January 22, 1984, amid boos and catcalls from the Modesto High fans, Coach Bill Stricker and East Union High's basketball team instituted a slowdown offense that put up only one shot over the first three quarters and didn't come up with a point until Marty Ott hit a free throw midway through the fourth quarter. Stricker's strategy didn't work though as the 36-3 final score suggests Modesto owns a 23-1 season mark.

EU had 23 turnovers and was a poor 14 of 33 shots from the free throw line. Bert Van Ryn led the winners with 17 points, while Paul Brogan had 14 and Pete Nelson and Cal Farrow added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Jeff Hammond led the Lancers with 17 points and Paul Emperador finished with 14.

1963: Victory over Oakdale is Buffs’ 11th straight victory

Forty years ago, on October 4, 1973, revenge is getting sweeter every week for East Union High's Lancers. For the third time in three weeks, EU has defeated a football team that beat them last year. This week's victim was the defending Valley Oak League champion St. Mary's High. With 16 seconds remaining in the game, halfback Carl Esquivel took a pitchout and roared around right end to score and give the Lancers a 28-25 victory over the visiting Rams in one of the most thrilling finishes ever witnessed at Guss Schmiedt Field. With only three weeks of practice ahead of them before the first game, the Buffaloes were put right to work to get into condition. With the loss of 16 lettermen from last year's squad, the coaches have their job cut out for them. There are 16 candidates working to win a starting job in the backfield and all four positions are open as last year's entire backfield was lost through ...

1993: Buffs pound Downey High 53-0 in grid opener

Forty years ago, on September 5, 1973, with their season-opener at Galt High just 10 days away, optimism pervades East Union High's football coaching staff. The Lancers lost just four players from last year's team, only two of them starters. Gone is all-Valley Oak League linebacker Bruce Forth, but head coach Vern Gebhardt finds himself with a bevy of fine defensive replacements. Experienced seniors Lonnie Price, Ron Dalben and Gary Mullins are currently working at the cornerback posts. Tough middle linebackers Rick Horn and Danny Coffman fill out the defensive backfield. Flashy senior Ron Barretto returns to the ...

1913: Lagorio fans 13, pitches two-hitter for Manteca victory

100 years ago, on August 8, 1913, Manteca still keeps in the limelight as an aggressive ball team and the long string of victories remains unbroken, causing the old leaguers to rub their eyes and take notice of the stellar brand of goods being dished out. Last Sunday, they handed the goose egg to the Sperry Flour aggregation of Stockton in a game that was full of ginger from start to finish. Lagorio was a puzzle to the visitors, retiring 13 batters and allowing but two hits, while the White Sox obtained six hits and lost nine via the strikeout ...

Haggerty won both hurdle events (16.0) and (21.9) and the high jump (5-7), while Peters nabbed both the sprints (:10.0 and :23.4) and ...

40 years ago: October 23, 1974 – Coach Vern Gebhardt's high-flying East Union High gridders were slowed a bit last Friday night at Sonora High but still managed to come from behind and nail down a bruising 14-7 decision over a fired-up pack of Wildcats. Halfback Dana Taylor slanted off tackle for three yards and a touchdown to give the Lancers the winning margin early in the final quarter. Doug Swift had scored the first EU tally on a one-yard smash with just over nine minutes remaining in the second period. The East Union defense, led by Mario Silveira and ...
